Buying Advice Needed
« on: 06 January 2008, 21:55:42 »

I'm in the market for a petrol Omega.  I'm going to do an LPG gas conversion on it.  My budget is £3k max and I'm trying to get the latest lowest mileage car as possible.  I intend to use the Omega as my main daily driver.  I started off looking for a manual V6 but I'd consider a 2.2 or even an automatic.  What would you good folk advise for a daily driver gas conversion candidate?  My head is boiled thinking about it!

Here are a few likely candidates and I would appreciate any advice or comments!

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/comparator.action?postcode=BT66%207GA

I hope that works.  Bear in mind that I'd have to add £300 to bring the 2 English cars back over to N.I.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Are you planning on doing the LPY yourself, or paying a fitter?

I can recommend a good kit...

I know someone who will soon be selling a V registered Facelift Elite, with LPG already fitted, for a very good price - probably to be available in a couple of weeks  ;D

Hi, I would be getting a fitter to do the job for me.  I have an 18 month old sequential injection system in my Nissan Almera at the minute.  I plan to get it transferred to an Omega which'll cost £300 for a 4 pot or £500 for a 6 pot.  I won't get any extra for the Almera with the LPG system in her.  People here don't seem to have cottoned on to the benefits of LPG.  Their loss.

A 2.2 would be cheaper to convert (and to insure), as mentioned above, but I'm in a quandary as to whether the V6 is worth the extra expense.  I haven't had the benefit of driving either by the way!

I have a 2.5 V6 which I DIY converted with the assitance of a couple of members here - I've never looked back. Loads of V6 power and refinement, and fuel at 40ppl ;D

Very Nice!  I'm actually watching that one in Ebay.  Maybe it's because I live in N.I. and can't mosey down the road, I feel it might be a bit risky buying it blind.  What do you think?

Still, a very nice appelaing car.  Common sense could go out the window with that one!

Hi James, that sounds interesting.  Could you please furnish me with a few more details on that one?  Pardon my ignorance, but what year is a V reg?  :-[

I am talking about Tunnie's LPG project. We have both worked on this, and intend to finish it off next weekend. Needed a fair bit doing, but it should be a goodun' when finished. I'd PM him for some more info :)

V is late 1999 early 2000

hi 6cylinderman i see you are from n ireland so i know what you mean about v6 manuals not easy to get but have you not considered ex police i know a lot of people who will say police cars are abussed and don,t have a very good spec but what you do get is very well mantained cars i have one and it was bought from a dealer direct from the police with only 20400 miles for a hell lot less than you budget and the dealer has them fairly reguraly and is in co armagh

Sorry about all the questions and thanks for the advice so far...

What do you think of this one?

It's an Elite and seems to be the one everyone hankers after.

Good to see a fellow countryman on the forum.  Mate, that sounds like just the ticket.  Would you pass the details of that dealer on to me, please?  Were these cars armoured with bullet proof glass i.e. do they weigh 3 tonnes and give crap fuel economy?!

no problem pal the armoured omegas are rare and only sell for about £500-£1200 and mostly are very roughly decommissioned the one that you want is the non armoured non traffic cars that are were used for under cover work and vip protection so normaly are very respectable and have low miles as for who the dealer is it is dennis o,carrol from tandragee (ballymore coachworks) and don,t be put off if you go over and you see some very rough ex police cars ( mostly armoured) siting about  , you will see his advert in n ireland autotrader under the auto breakers section i am just looking at the 13th-19th of december and he had a 2002 white omega 3.2 50k so you need to check his lastest stock and you never no your luck if you want directions i can give them no problem

the only problem is all the armour is removed as part of the decomissing process and they don,t half wreck the interior and the doors in the process of removing the bullit proof glass and the dash and everything is just hanging there not even attached properly so they are only any good for parts
