dreaded automatic gearbox check 1996 3.0 v6 24v el
« on: 20 July 2010, 01:51:12 »

i will get straight to the point, i can start the car and after about 10 seconds "automatic gear box" check comes on the computer and you can hear a relay behind the fuse box click, in the 10 seconds before the warning comes on the car will drive in d (1st and the sport button works) when it tryes to change into 2nd or after the 10 secs it goes into limp mode ie stays in 3rd in drive, although it can be driven in 123,d,and r. i have changed the gearbox fluid and filter and this hasent soreted it. does anyone know how to read the gearbox ecu codes, using the "paperclip" or wire shorting 2 pins on the diagnostic plug (16pin) the car has only 75000 miles on it and it is minted, really want to get this fixed so i can use the car, if i dont its as good as scrap and would be such a waste of a good luxury car.

Hi
Sounds like the selector switch is playing up.  Sometimes they can be resurrected by cleaning, sometimes a new(used) one is needed.  There's probably something in the maintenance section on this.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

i tried cleaning the selector switch, couldnt ge tit off the side of the gear box, i disconnected the linkage rod, and the two blots that hold it on but it just wouldnt budge,so i managed two wedge it open and spray in contact cleaner to semi-clean it. also can i ask what makes you think its the selector when it is selecting all gear positions ?

The previous answers have suggested the gearbox selector switch as this is a common cause of what you describe.
If you are manually selecting 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse the selector does not have to decide what gear to be in as you have told it but in drive mode it needs the selector to work correctly to know what to do. If it doesn't know what to do it goes into limp mode.

Hope this explains it a bit more. :y

ahh so the selector is actualy deciding what gear the box has to be in ? i thought it just changed a physical movement ie gearstick movement into an electrical movement ie switch, so the switch could be damaged at the point where it sits in d ?

noooooooo!!! dont spray stuff in!will ruin the seal!!take the selecter rod off it and undo the bolts one at top, pain to get too and one at about 3 o clock position.when cable is unplugged should pull of pretty easily.when undoing and doing up the casing of the switch run a thin bead of sealent in the grove to stop water getting in again and be carefull not to overtighten them as they arnt strong!!this should work though!done mine a few times on different omegas and is always the cause.hope that helps matey!! :y

It's just wear and tear, not damaged. As said, a clean up sometimes works but failing that get a new one. Quite straight forward DIY job. :y

ok i will attempt to take the switch off again but it wouldn budge the last time once the rod bolt and 2 side 10mm bolts are removed. Am i missing something? dont want to force it off and break it though. Was considering buying the cable and cd to plug

Cheapo, snide tech 2 (the kind you are looking at n ebay) very doubtful that it would read gearbox codes :y

sorry for the previous reply that equipment is being returned, basicaly it is rubbish but i did get a code 56 for the auto box, which is the selector switch, so managed to get it off, cleaned it, and put it back together but, the white plastic (inside switch) that sits onto the gear rod shaft that the gear rod bolts to, is cracked beyond repair (tried fibreglass), so i need a new one i think, the car now drives n all gears but stays in 1st when in drive, and the indicator lights are back on althought, park is fine and so is 1 in other gears they either all light up or dont, and in d number 1 lights up. so if anyone has or can tell me if a switch from any model would fit mine, would help me, also does anyone know if you can just buy the white plastic inner switch bit ? that has the 4 metal connectors on it, and replace just that part ?

It would be a good idea to update your location in the User Control Panel so it shows where abouts you are.  A lot of Omega's are being broken at all times by members on here.  There is bound to be someone local to you, or someone who can post you the switch you need for very little money.     As an example, I am in Bristol, and you'd be more than welcome to come and remove the switch in question from my breaker FOC.

HTH!
