Questions about Facelift front seats.
« on: 25 July 2010, 19:41:48 »

I've got a few serious questions about Facelift front seats ?.

Was there ever a model that had manual adjustable seat height subframes, such as having a cranking handle, rather than electric motor adjustment ?.  As I don't see the point of having subframes with motors in them if it's only ever used everynow and then.  As I would like to change mine for them if possible.  Or failing that, anyone know of the best solution / way into making my own "fixed" height subframes that wouldn't look out of place ?.
Obviously they would have to be safe, but has anyone else done this without failing the Mot because of it ?.

And because the motor loom is also part of the airbag plug, would not using the motor wiring through a fault code up, and cause the airbag light to come up ?.

Thanks.  :y

no electric only, Elite seats came with a tiny winding handle for the motor to move them by hand

non electric seats probably not available.  :-/ even plod ones have electric height adjustment.
the airbag/pretensioner wiring plugs are the two smaller ones under the main plug. think they are yellow/orange and yellow/pink. as long as they are connected once your done should get no warning lights. :) dont forget to diconnect the battery about an hour before you pull the airbag plugs, else you might get the side airbag go off in your face. :'(
hope of some use. :y

Erm... shame, seems I'll have to make my own subframe by the looks of it, was hoping there was a simple solution.  Thanks for the advise so quick though.

Yes I know about the battery off before unplugging, I've already asked that one earlier, as didn't want a face full of airbag  ;D  . Cheers for letting me know though  :y.

Just a thought, and it may be completely stupid, but my past Carlton and Senator seats were manual.

Howabout getting a set of those from a scrapyard or from a still going car?

Ok, perhaps it is a silly idea!! ::) ::) ::)

Actually, it's not so silly Lizzie.  If I can find one, I'll need to do some measuring to see if the seating mounts on the seats themself are the same as the Omega, and also the holes for the mounting points to the floor.
Mind you, trying to find an old vauxhall in my local breakers maybe tad more difficult ?.

Unless anyone out there got access to Calton / Senator subframes for comparasion that could help me out ?  ;)

Right, thanks Smegmatt :y :y  In that case are you a member of AutobahnStormers?  If you are when their Straight Six News is next published have a look to see if any Senator / Carlton whole cars, or spares are being sold.  The May addition had at least two Senators fit for breaking for sale (Pete Walters 01923 236252), and no doubt there will be more ;) ;)

Erm... think I'm definately going to have to join up with AutobahnStormers, as seems to be lots of advantages.  Plus shortly I need to get some new discs & pads, so think it would be a good idea.

Appreciate the info Lizzie, it's a starting point  :y

You'll never regret it Smegmatt for the £20 per year with a TC; saved me that many times over :y :y

I must be missing something fundamental here, but huh? :-? You want to expend time/effort/money, possibly up to fabricating your own seat subframes or trying to attach your omega cushions to carlton/senny frames, all just to remove the electric height adjustment feature? :-?

If you think it's pointless, couldn't you just... not use it? Or if you really must, take out the buttons? Or if you really, really must, take off the motors and chuck them away? As I said - I must be missing some really beneficial reason to do this :-?.

Do you feel the same way about the motors in your wing mirrors? ;)

Omega A (i.e. Carlton/Senator) seat mountings are different to Omega B.

I have Omega B seat subframes in my Lotus Carlton, some floorpan welding was required, together with assembling a subframe out of both Omega A and B

the reason for doing it was to get seat bases with height adjustment at both front and rear fitted, as this is critical for comfort. ( it's all about ischeal tuberoscities  ;) )

I do agree with the sentiment, there's nothing quite so annoying as electrical "lard" in the way of needless toys. In this particular case, the best option would be to select your best seating position and weld up the seat base in that position. You can then set about removing the motor and electrics.

air bag wiring is entirely separate, but remove the battery just to make sure ( see warnings above )

I know quite a lot of you are thinking what's the point of it all I know, and I really must be mad with ideas, and things I'm doing.

It's twofold.

Whilst in it's day it was aimed at competing against such like as BMW, Merc, Audi, etc.  And hence to attract the executive type of buyer why all the 'toys' were added, etc.

For me I'm trying to get rid of some of the things that I'm not going to be overly using, and simplify the chance of something breaking, and not being able to use it when I need to, then having to fix it, just to use it  >:(  (does that make sense ?).

And the other reason is, for other members on here, may want replacement parts for their cars, and want to keep the 'gadget element' in their cars, so the things I get rid of won't go to waste, and be of benefit to someone else.

I know, I know, some of you probably still don't get it why I'm doing it  :-?  :-?.  Well don't worry about it, just humour me and I won't bite then  ;D  ;D

At the end of the day though, I'm still keeping another Mig on the road, and keeping the scrap yard at bay from it  :y

Nope! :-? Still don't see any point in removing something that's working & will likely work till the rest of the car fall apart from around it.  :-?
If you were trying to work around something that had failed ....... I might see a point  ;)
