Abs module Screws/Bolts
« on: 24 July 2010, 19:49:38 »

Hi, does anyone know the length and type of screw/ bolt used to hold the module in place, just incase one goes AWOL when removing or refitting the module?

Hello, IIRC all 6 are m4 sized with either a torx 20 or 25 female head (so you will need male bits). I can't remember the exact length. When i did mine recently I only used the original screws in the two top screw holes. On the middle and bottom, I used much longer screws (m4 from B & Q - used for light switches/sockets), they were about 60mm long. I also used spacers. This was to make it easier to locate the holes and tighten them up. If you do this just make sure that whatever length of screw/spacer you use, that the threaded length of screw not covered by the spacer is the same length as the length on your old screws.
The only problem I had doing this is as the new screws take a flatheaded bit it was a bit harder to give them a final nip up, as oppose to torx bits. IIRC, it says about spacers in the ABS ECU guide in the maintenance section.

Hello again, just found some of my old bolts. 25mm m4 machine type screw with torx head. You can have my old ones, I've got 4, if you don't plan on using longer screws with spacers. PM me if required. HTH

Careful!! I think light switch screws are 3.5mm!! If they are then they may well go in and give the impression of tightening up ok, but will quickly work loose!! And, having done this job myself, I wouldn't want to do it twice!! As for screws/spacers lengths, check out the How To guide.

If you still want to go ahead and use the original screws I'm sure I have a couple of spares myself. PM me and I'll take a look - if I have I can pop them in an envelope for you.

Well the ones i used are m4, I got them from B and Q, it says so on the packet. They fit in the abs (fine), and fit in light switches. Obviously double check first, because i wouldn't want to do this again either! Rather do this than wishbones though.

Screws for fixing switch plates and sockets to back boxes are definately M3.5, not M4...whatever B&Q say.

I measured them and compared them, they work fine and haven't damaged the threads

Half a mill is probably hard to spot and you may just get away with it. But two things could happen. They could 'slip' as you finally nip them up (damaging the internal threads on the ABS body). Or they could appear to be done up ok but then work loose over time.

Remember a few years ago when an airline pilot got sucked out of the cockpit window when it blew out shortly after take off? That was caused by bolts that were one size too small!!

Well, just checked my old ABS unit bolts against the (spare) new ones (m4) I got from B&Q. They are exactly the same size, in threads, in nuts, in anywhere there is no play or movement. Absolutely none, just to be clear. If anyone does their ABS ECU, obviously it would be wise to check suitability if using fixings different to the original ones, this goes without saying.
