2.2 Fuel smell and P0420 fault code
« on: 01 August 2010, 20:09:03 »

Hi Guys,

Need some advice please....

I've got an exhaust emmisions light on and it comes back with P0420 as the fault code? Any ideas what's causing this/

Secondly, I seem to have a fuel smell that seems to be coming from underneath the car and through the air vents when I have them open. I haven't noticed any leaks under the car?

Are the two things related?

I appreciate any help, Thanks

Paul

0420 pre cat efficiency low is not uncommon on the drive by wire engines, and is nothing much to worrie about in real terms on its own.

Sounds like a fuel leek to me tbh.

Does the car run as it should?

Hmmm, could it be overfuelling for some reason, though the first lamda should be its job to prevent that...

Cheers for the advice guys,

I haven't noticed any leaks at all and the car seems to be running fine with no apparent fuel loss etc.. I'm concerned as to what is causing the petrol smell as you can smell it more whilst stationary with windows open.. It does seem to be coming through the vents to?

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Check the fuel filter mate. I was smelling petrol for a week & never found the leak, my lad found it when he took it to work to have it checked out, the filter was weeping fuel at idle & leaking  like a good 'un when the throttle was pressed! :D. You will find it on the drivers side just in front of the rear wheel or thereabouts  :y

Cheers for that mate, I will get it checked... Could it be related to the engine light on with code P0420 present? I reckon my CAT is playing up or on it's way out? Wondered if smell was coming from there.

It's possible of course, but the pre cat code usually comes up on it's own for no reason other than the cat is tired no more or less to it than that. My car currently has 0430, soon to be followed by your 0420 on bank 1(?) and I have no fuel smell, the two don't go hannd in hand. And there are no running issues as the main cat is still doing it's job, in fact, take a look in the maintenance guides, you will see a guide on rectifying the fault by re welding the second lambda

So don't rush out and buy another cat first off, check the fuel system for leeks and go from there.

Question for the tech 2 boffins on here, would there be a fuel trim error code if it was over fuelling?
Presuming there would be personally?
