Hi all.

I've got a rocker cover gasket change planned for this weekend and, as I was putting my daily litre of oil in, I noticed the filler neck wobbles!

It just so happens that it is the lower left camshaft cover that is leaking - but I'm now starting to wonder if it is the filler-neck-to-cover joint that is spewing oil, rather than the rocker-cover-to-head joint.

When I get the rocker cover off, what sort of neck-to-cover joint will I find? Bolted? Riveted? Welded? Glued? Will I be able to tighten it up in some way (tightened or replaced screws/rivets)? Or will I need a replacement rocker cover?

I'd like to find out before I start the job! 'Coz if the only real fix is a replacement, I'd hate to have done all the strip out only to have to do it again next week!

Hi Gaz, the filler neck unscrews a quarter of a turn. A cam cover bolt locates into a hole on the bottom part of the neck which you will need just to lift slightly to get it over the bolt. You will understand better when you see it.
Wipe off the oil around that area first then see if the oil is running down from the neck

Sounds like this can be done without disturbing anything else, yeah? Does it attach in a sort of bayonet manner? Is there a seal of some type under it or do I just slop loads of RTV round it?

Couple of months ago I was working in that area changing the ABS ECU. Could I have loosened the filler neck without realising it?

Hi Gary. You could also check to see if the rubber 'O' ring is in tact . it fits over the bottom of the filler neck to make an oil tight seal

I believe it is the same type of fitting as the oil cap to filler pipe Gary. Some V6 owners remove the filler pipe to eliminate the mayonaisse buildup on short runs & just fit the cap directly to the cam cover.

Not like a bayonet light bulb where you push down and twist. It is just lift the little lip up with your left finger then twist anti clockwise off with your right hand
There is a rubber seal O ring which sits at the top of the threaded part of the neck which are pence form Vauxhall if you want to change it.

I have seen a few like that but when you remove the Cam Cover the mayo is under there instead :-? so not sure I think its a great idea personally.

Ah, so the filler neck is little more than an extension tube by the sounds of it, yes? I guess fitting the filler cap directly to the camcover will at least establish if it is the source of my leak - be dead handy if it is!! (Although I bet it is then a bugger to top the oil up!!)

Mayo? What mayo? Since Darth educated me to use the genuine VX oil I have had no mayo at all in any driving methods. Prior to that I used Mobil 1 too and that, although being a high quality oil still gave mayo.
Genuine VX - That is what I will stick to now.

You've just answered your own question there Bionic  Unfortunately not everyone uses VX oil, and not everyone for whatever reason, changes their oil at the correct intervals. The longer the oil is left in the engine the more degraded it becomes & then especially on short, stop start journeys mayonaisse may become evident.

Will it leak for sure if there is no O ring fitted to the filler neck?

the cap has a seal on it whish seals to the rim once it is turned clockwise. the filler neck fits into the hole, hence having an o ring on it, the cap sits over the hole and has a flat washer type seal on it.
chop the bottom off a 1ltr oil can for topping up/refilling. neck on bottle fits filler tube/hole in cam cover nicely.

I'll be taking the whole lot to bits this weekend when I change the gaskets and clear out the breathers.

Sounds like tightening it up while I have it off the car and on the bench is going to be a piece of cake!

you'll need to remove the filler neck to get at the bolt under the tab on it. then when you put it back toghether, you'll need to leave it of so as to refit said bolt.  :-/ if the filler neck is position right, then it should tighten as you turn it clockwise. the tab clips over the bolt head and stops it from turning.
