Thats right

2.2 CD
Auto
2001

Starts up and goes into limp mode, if he does not mean auto into limp mode then he needs to give us more pointers.  Says when hot, I used to get my carltton dropping into linp mode after a spirited drive, at the time I reckon the ATF was getting past it.

Best bet would be to see what the car thinks is wrong and take it from there.
You need a diagnostic check doing to see which sensor is causing the (I guess) engine management light to come on, you can do a simple check for your self by doing the pedal test. I'll see if I can find a link explaining how to perform this test...

Tried the search function on this site and got no results so tried Google and found this...

"Pedal Trick
Foot on brake, gas pedal to the floor.
Turn on ignition to position II (do not fire the engine in position III)
When dash lights go out the yellow light car symbol with a spanner through it should flash.
4 sets of flashes/numbers pause and so on.
10 flashes is zero.
Constant flashing no codes."

Taken from here...

If the car goes into limp mode accompanied by the 'S' transmission light then that is, as hinted at above, signifying a fault with your automatic gearbox, pedal trick won't work with anything other than e.m.l. faults.
I doubt your car has gearbox issues as a mechanical fault would be less likely to clear with ignition on/off's...

Only known way to read codes on a 2.2 is via a code reader.  Suspect to see a P0340, but don't change anything until you have read the Engine, gearbox and ABS ECUs.

You'll need to find some-one local who has the required code reading eqipment, '"My Naff Code Reader"' or similar.

I recently posted a request on a popular Vectra forum asking for help, I needed "My Naff Code Reader" to sort out a problem on my 'new' Vectra, The chap contacted me and the problem was rectified within days, he wouldn't even accept any payment from me!

Suspect it's the dreaded cam sensor problem on a 2.2.

Where abouts are you in Birmingham.

I have a code reader.
