Steering Idler
« on: 11 December 2008, 13:02:01 »

I need to replace my steering idler assembly due to the bush being worn out.  I have purchased the new components, both the bracket that bolts to the Chassis and the idler arm itself, with bush inserted. I intend to fit them to the car this weekend (providing it's not snowing too much lol) but not sure what Torque values to apply when fitting.

Haynes Manual seems pretty vague on this. Any help would be appreciated

Cheers   ::) ::) :y :y

It may be listed under "v6 torque values" on page 5 of the maintenance section.
You also need to downsize your avatar pic, its covering half your text, haveing trouble reading it, on my phone at least.

Thanks for the advice. I shall be fitting new bits, but cannot find what the torque value is for the nut at the bush end, (not the taper joint)

Thanks again Guys.

One more question though. I notice that the new idler bush is a relatevely loose fit on the "Chassis Mounted" locating pin (part number 90445587) is this normal? I thought I should replace the pin also as a precautionary measure just in case of any wear on the old pin.  ::)

Cheers

Thats normal and not an issue once the nut is fitted and fully tightened

morning all, can i just confirm that this play in the new idler and original mount bracket 90445587 is correct, i have the same problem and since changing it, i found that i'm getting a lot of wandering from slight free play now, i have not tightened up the nut over tight, so will check the 60m n later, i will say though, the new idler off ebay £12.60 + £2.60 pp from vaux parts preston, seems to have more play than old one!

i have nipped up the pump adjustment also and still the same, you can see the idler moving up and down and feel a lot of movement in the left wheel now when jacked up.

thanks shark1e

p.s anyone know a price from main dealers for the bracket 90445587?

thanks rob

i have just been priced £67 + vat retail for the idler support arm 90445587 and £57 + vat normal trade price, they even have one in stock local to me.

as it is in stock and not special order, i pressume i should be able to return it, if i vernier the new shaft to the old one and find they are the same, hence not needing the new one,

Cheers but do these brackets holding the idler wear? or does it need to be tightened upto 60nm which should be approx 44lbft if i'm right, or is it best to wind on a few more lbft? my old one was loose and the bottom washer was spinning when touched,
so hoping it has not worn the shaft, if so then i will have to get one.

ps sorry to hijack this post but may help the other member if we both have same issue.

just to update, i purchased 90445587 bracket from vauxhall dealers, and took my own bracket and original gm idler along to test, dealer brought out both bracket and idler and i was horrified but pleased to see how much play was in their new items, so had the bracket refunded and set about taking off the new cheap idler off ebay,
once my original gm one was back on and tightened up, i could not find any free play anymore, it seems to me the cheaper idler is double bushed, and the inner bush was appaearing to move in the outer bush, so i have emailed seller for a refund as th original is fine and working ok.
