SECURITY WHEEL BOLT

Hi all.

I've just noticed that the part for removing the security bolts on the wheels is missing, so I have no way of changing the wheel if I get a punture (only bought car 2 weeks ago).

I'm going to source another one but I don't know exactly what it is that I am looking for   :-?

Is it just a bolt that fits onto the end of the wrench which you then use as normal or is it some sort of special key?

I'd like to know before I ring around asking for one so I don't sound like a complete tit on the phone  ::)

Yep. Pop into a friendly tyre fitting outlet they should be able to remove them. Then replace with standard bolts, the security ones are shite

Are they really awkward to remove then rob?
The previous owner kept the original bolts thankfully so I won't need to buy new ones.

Depends on scrap value, and the size of tyres on a thieves car. :-/

They are a nightmare i sat on the side of the A13 after a blow out a couple of weeks ago and it took me about 45 minutes to get the bastard thing off. It didnt help i had a tyre bar about as big as a cocktail stick. First thing i done when i got home was take them all off stupid things.

I must admit I don't tighten the security studs as tight as the others, I also use a bit of coperslip on them. I do have a set of decent ones somewhere if you need some. (Price to follow when I find them I.A.W. the new rules)
I would have a good scout round first though, it may be in the glovebox or wheel well.

As per Agemo.

Have a good look around for the key. It might be in with the tools in the boot or in spare wheel well, in a door pocket.

I hate the locking nuts with a vengeance after Kwik fit sheered my tool the day before I left for the continent. It isn't even as simple as using someone elses as the VX three prong affairs have different offsets depending on the part number. Since then the only person who has taken off or refitted mine are me. Copper slip and I carry a torque wrench in the car. A bit OTT  I even wrote and complained to VX about their rubbish product. Not interested.

the chrome/stainless hex cover? it should have it's very own removal tool.

After Kwik-Fit broke one of the prongs off my wheel stud removal tool too, I've never had problems with the later 'cake cutter' type ......

It may be worth contacting the previous owner if you can't find the wheel nut key in the vehicle. Also, if you have the case that the set came in you may find the slip of paper with the key code printed on it, a Vx dealer can supply a new key from this number...

Standard Vx ones don't take much effort to remove providing they haven't been put on very tight, and you don't value your tools...

Sounds like they are more trouble then their worth, it makes you feel better knowing that they are on there but the odds of someone stealing your wheels is relatively slim ( make sure you check this thread in a weeks time for my new post saying how my wheels have been nicked )

The strange thing is the previous owner kept just about everything else apart from the key.

The warning triangle in its original box , car jack , wrench..towing eye..and screwdriver all present in the original leather carrrying case, spare wheel with brand new tyre thats never been used, even kept the original plastic box that the security bolts came in.

He put the 4 replaced wheel bolts in there, just not the bloody key  ::)

All old reciepts and M.O.T.S, manuals.....the lot.

Have checked every nook and cranny and its definatly not there.
Taking into account what some of you fine gentlemen have said about the key my guess would be that it got broken when removing the bolts one time and he threw it away.

Still not sure whether to get them taken off and make do or to get a top quality set that won't give me any problems.
I'll have to do one of those two things as the ones that are on there look original so I guess that means their a headache just waiting to happen  :D :D

My Omega came with the 'cake cutter' type (I think, never heard that term before!). I managed to get them off no trouble, once I'd gotten hold of my Mates vice...
