yorkshire dales
« on: 02 October 2006, 01:08:37 »

Hi folks,

I'm planning to give the barge a stretch of its' legs (and mine too) with a run up to and around the yorkshire dales later this week - planning to be there for a week or so.

Any recommendations on where to go whilst up there - never visited before - heard it's nice up there though  ;)

Where are you staying?

Are you driving around or doing some walking as well?

I'm going to use just B&B's - have got a couple of guide books, one which has walks only - the other has a couple of 70-odd mile drives too, which will be handy for when it rains  ;D

Hoping to be mostly walking rather than driving though ...

The weather is always like that up here. Well, almost always. There are usually three days every year when it doesn't rain. We call that summertime.  ;D

Would recommend you try Clapham, just north/North east of Settle, try the Clapham Inn, Proprieter Keith and his wfe; excellent place, roads are good for driving, and the area is good if you fancy walks or caving, you can also try the national park caves, reindeer cavern (which I worked on a few years ago).

If you do go there just tell Keith Mad mick recommended, himalayan trip.

If you start around Settle or Clapham you can do one or all of the 3 peaks, have a look at Malham cove and walk over the top to Goredale Scar and return to Malham via Janet's Foss. Move on via Kettlewell to Hawes, have a look at Castle Bolton then perhaps move on to one of the northern dales for a change in character, say Swaledale, stop at Barnard Castle or even Richmond.
If you get a wet spell then take a trip over the Settle to Carlisle, its a dry way to see the scenery and the missus can do a bit of shopping in Carlisle.

thanks for the info ...

Mick, I can't find "Clapham Inn" - but I did find a "New Inn Hotel" - is that the one?
Matchless - will be taking that info with me and probably pop over to Carlisle anyway ...  ::)

You could always try the 'The Three Peaks of Yorkshire' challenge

http://www.merseyventure.com/yorks/

Its only 26 miles.....took us about 11 hours with an hour in the pub (bloody hard work though!)
