No Cambelt on my car
« on: 29 August 2010, 01:50:11 »

I've got a timing chain.   ::)   Are there guidelines on when and if these should be checked, changed, retensioned or whatever.
Not that I have a problem but forewarned is forearmed.

Generally, it's only worth inspecting the timing chain if the engine is coming apart anyway or you suspect a problem due to rattling, etc.

Keep the oil changes regular and it should practically last the life of the engine.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I was getting concerned after reading all the paranoidal (is that a word) posts about cambelts. I will sleep easier tonight.    Thanks  :y

Wait a minute though, you could take some photos and do a guide for the maintenance section on TD's.  :D  :D  :D :D

Did my chain's, tensioners and guides a few months ago. Get the parts from BMW as they are about £100 cheaper than Vauxhall oh and its not a nice job to do ::)

It's only overdue a service. I'm not doing the chain :P

Besides I was the wrong side of Ecosseland for you, stayed in Invernan and Drumnadrochit.

What was your motivation for tackling the job. Routine maintenance, noisy chain, or just like a challenge.   :)

When you say £100 cheaper what was the total cost then?

I didn't mean the chain either, I stared into the bowels of my engine trying to spot the oil filter and when I spotted it through a tiny crevice in the maze of wires, cables, tubes and pipes I thought to myself. Someone should write a guide on this.   Then you answered my post.  ;D ;D ;D

I can do ;) Easiest way to the filter is from underneath with the undertray off :y
