took my new omega home tonight,some 5 miles of a drive,(live in Orkney),started smoking from under the bonnet just as getting home,loss of power,conked out in driveway,lifted bonnet,a Fire down by the oil filler cap,has melted the outer wrapping of wiring harness,but thats all i can see,havent attempted to start it again,oh and filler tube gunk?bad news?hasn't done much more that 3 mile spurts in over a year,so the last owner said
any ideas welcome,thought maybe summat just nested in there caught fire of manifold,couldn't see too dark :-/

That really is bad luck. I think you could be right with the something nesting theory. Have a good look in the morning when you can see better then report back. With a bit of luck you may just need to check\replace the wiring down there.

Short journeys wont help filler tube gunk,Engine does not get hot causing condensation causing oil to emulsify,change oil flush and change oil again and give it a decent run.good luck on the fire.

I had a fire when the cam cover gasket failed
It did not damage the wiring but I had to get a new cam cover because it melted the edge and the gasket would not fit

I had a fire when the cam cover gasket failed

Spot on mate,was oild coming out from the cam cover,leaking onto manifold,doesn't look as if its done any harm,
had to fire it up again to find the leak,very lumpy at low revs and won't idle,just cuts outs,fine above 2,000 revs,previous owner said mass air meter might be naff,so maybe that and a good service?

Anyway,this is her,just as i bought her so forgive me she's not looking her best

And the dreaded engine bay,been around ALOT of cars but this looks a nightmare

Lol that ones ok,other ones as dull as anything,machine polisher prob bring it back up
