Rattling exhaust
« on: 01 September 2010, 21:27:20 »

Okay, car back from garage, rattle is confirmed as coming from the cat, mechanic says internal part of cat has broken away and is loose inside the metal casing, he suggested i put a block of wood above the cat and use a hydraulic jack to squash the cat to stop the internals from rattling :o
He also said he has smashed the cats before now and they still go through the emissions test and pass as long as the lambda is working :o

I've seen 'squashed' CATS before.  It will shut it up, but you are not fixing a problem.  You may even restrict the exhaust to a point where you will do serious damage to other parts of the engine.

If you cant afford a new cat right now, leave the rattle until you can.  It's the only sensible thing to do.

Its a genuine one, is it likely to fail emissions as it is now?
I can put up with the rattle until i can afford a new cat.

It's not guaranteed to fail, but chances are it will.  :(
