Cleaning the Whole EGR Assembly
« on: 04 September 2010, 23:34:08 »

hi guys, i think my egr valve is sticking, ive taken it out before and looked at it, i cant get the little piston in there to move at all so i assume that it supposed to but it is stuck, i was thinking of taking it out and putting it in a bath of strong washing up liquid and water to dissolve the oil and grease which may be holding it shut, if this doesent work how much are replacement egr valves and how do i get one? thanks

It's carbon not oil and grease. Best to soak it in either Mr. Muscle type over cleaner (pure peroxide is best but not available in the UK) or a half decent paint stripper like Nitromors. Leave it soak a couple of hours then a good clean with carb cleaner to flush it out. Finish off with a little squirt of PTFE spray lube or a drip of 3-in-1 :y

coming from a man who knows..... ;)(lol) you can clean them and yes the valve should move!the biggest problem is that the spring is bloody strong.....a descent flat head screwdriver length is necessary.the way i have cleaned them before is using bog standard brake cleaner(do this over a bin cos the shitfluid that comes off is a pain to clean.when youve sprayed it and scraped the 'coke'deposits for a while, try to spray wd40/duck oil/TT (or whatever spray lube you choose to use) behind the valve and keep levering the valve until its free.this normally takes 15-20 mins but thats in a garage with all the tools and vices i want! :y

Up and down. If you have any WD40 BIN IT! IT'S SH!TE!!!!! Use duck/3-in-1/PTFE to lube and yes the spring is strong.

I cleaned mine with white spirits, still had to scrape the carbon off with a screwdriver blade.  Put on a pair of gloves,   :y    I didn't and hands are still black after 3days.  :-[
