Alloy wheel query
« on: 15 September 2010, 22:48:53 »

Hi all,
On Monday night, I hit a flippin' great pothole, which ripped the tyre to shreds, and I thought the car was falling apart. :(
Today I took the wheel in to have a new tyre fitted, and the mechanic said he could not balance the wheel perfectly as it has a buckle. He reckoned by the state of the old tyre, it was the pothole that probably caused the buckle. He asked if it was going on back or front, I replied 'the back'  and he said it was safe, but if I did get any vibration, that would be the reason.
Question is....can these alloys be repaired (straightened)...its a 17".....what is the normal price.....or would it be cheaper to buy another one.
TIA  :y

Go NOW and photograph the pothole, with something as a reference for size (a ruler, fag packet, rampant rabbit).

Write to the council claiming compensation.  RESULT!

I believe you can repair a slightly bucked rim, obvioulsy depends on how bent it is. As for buying another, it depends on whether anyone is willing to split a set. Single rims do appear from time to time, just a case of waiting.  :y

I did it myself on behalf of my girlfriend at the time.  She had a Seicento, and hit quite a nasty pothole which donald ducked the tyre and alloy.

I went to the pothole, photographed it with a fag packet in the hole (it was considerably bigger than a fag packet) and wrote a letter of discontent to the local Council with copies of quotations to replace the wheel and tyre.

Without any question at all, they sent a cheque for the total amount accompanied by a letter of severe apology.

I sincerely hope this happens in your case too.

I had my sump plug ripped out by a slighty raised manhole in Bolton town centre. I did the same and sent receipts for a new sum pan & oil. The paid up, but denied any liablility. I was lucky that I drove up the road without the sump plug & noticed then the oil slick under the car before I started it when I got back.
