gearbox question ... :)
« on: 16 September 2010, 12:49:55 »

On behalf of someone I've never met ..... to keep it simple ... basically in a caravan forum there was a request about extra cooling on an auto Omega, I replied informing about the built in cooler, and the "general" advice on changing some of the ATF at around 80,000 miles if used for regular towing, and gave a very rough breakdown of how to do the change. I have recieved the following and wonder if anyone cares to comment ?? ..  as I've never heard of a BMW autobox only the ar25/ar35 ??

First of all hope you dont mind me contacting you, you are the only one that gave me the info I required as I no longer have the tools or space to undertake such a job and my age !! I thought I would take car into garage our local Vauxhall one wanted £90 to do work found another not Vauxhall who would do it for £60 this one did question why I wanted oil changed and after explaining they agreed booked car in for a two hour job only to be told they could /would not do it because it was a B.M.W type sealed for life box and still had a seal on it cant make up my mind if they shyed away from job or what, We are off today for a break so have not had chance to contact Vauxhall dealer if you wish to comment to this E-Mail that would be fine.

The 4L30E is aa BMW gearbox reference used on 3 and 5 series from 1989 but it also appears to be AR25 and 35

BMW used GMs automatic gearboxes in some models so it's the other way around. The don't make them. The 4L30E is GM's designation for this box, of which two variants, AR25 and AR35 were used in the Omega.

Sounds like they are trotting out the "sealed for life" rubbish from the service schedule. Never seen a physical seal on the gearbox, though, so that's probably rubbish.

Take it to someone who wants the business, I suppose?
