tracking on 2.5td 1998

Do you have to pop the ball joint on the hub end each time to adjust the tracking or merely loosen and twist the pinch bolt tub between the inner and outer track rod ends

That :y but there is two pinch bolts on the track rod. No need to pop ball joints.

so its twist one way to increase toe in and the other way for toe out is it ? thanks

According to Mr Haynes, Toe-in for the Estate is 0* 10'  This is the same as the Saloon. 
Well worth a good wire brush as well as soaking in penetrating oil the day before.

Either shorten or lengthen the tie-rods to achieve the desired setting.

A word of advice:
BOTH tie-rod assemblies should be of equal length, and have an equal amount of threads from both the inner and outer ball-joints inserted into sleeve before you begin adjusting to the specified setting.
