Speedo not working
« on: 02 October 2010, 18:16:38 »

Had the omega 3 days now , and yippee my first problem. :(

the speedo has stopped working, which im not sure if its a matter of course, but the cruise is out , and the trip computer isnt reading right (im guessing both of these are run on speedo information)

Any pointers to what i can look for would be most appreciated.

car is a 2000, 2.5 elite estate auto

I could be wrong, but, ABS ECU...  I believe that sends the signal to the speedo...

Check if the ABS and TC are working. If they arent it will be the ABS ecu as suggested.

Does the ABS and Traction Control lights work?  these should come when you turn on the ignition.

Also does the steering seem heavy?

Do you mean the lights aren't working, or the tc and abs aren't working?

Sounds like it is your abs ecu I'm afraid, and no it isn't an 'easy fix'. Vauxhall apparently charge £800 or so to do the job.

There is a guide in the maintenance section, where you can do it yourself. I did mine, so have quite a few others. It is doable but took me six hours to get it off mainly because the six bolts you need to get access to are in an awkward place.

Remove abs ecu, send off to BBA-Reman, ECUtesting.com or another reputable firm and for about £130 they will fix the problem and return it to you. You then refit and all is well.

A second hand one can be put on but I believe you need to get one from the same engine and gearbox, otherwise it needs programming. The 2nd hand one could fail aswell.

When mine went, the light came on, and no speedo signal, therefore no trip computer or miles clocking up, then after a month or so my steering went heavier (I think as the speed sensitive power steering also takes a speed signal from abs ecu).

Others have suggested it might be a good idea to check/clean your abs sensors

as far as i am aware , its just the lights on the TC/abs that arn't working...

when you say a second hand from the same engine / gearbox, what do you mean by that..

also would a unit from a 2000 vectra gsi work?

Do you mean when driving the car, the TC and ABS lights stay illuminated after all other dash lights have gone out?

From the same engine/gearbox, I mean a 2nd hand unit from another car that has the same engine and gearbox.

Don't know about one from the Vectra, but I thought the Vectra GSI had a 2.6, whereas your car has a 2.5, with one being fwd and the other rwd (different gearboxes? I don't know) I doubt it. Anyway, if it's second hand it could go the same way.

Personally I would go for a refurb.

Other more knowledgable people might be along shortly to advise about 2nd hand parts and reprogramming.

BTW, this is an intermittent fault, but gradually gets worse until total failure. Who dod you buy the car from? They might have knowingly sold it to you like that. :-/

the tc/abs lights do not come on at all..

as for the vec gsi, they came in both engine sizes, and only changed to the 2.6 at the same time the omega did.

but yes it is fwd, but from what ive gathered so far, it looks like a DIY removal, with a refurb of my unit. :(

i needed a car in a hurry after my vec was written off, with working 7 days a week, and bought this car off the bay from a trader....i know i shouldnt have got this in a rush , but my hands were tied,as i use the car to travel the 40 miles to work...

You learn something new everyday! LOL

If you say the TC/ABS lights don't come on, it might not be this, it could be as others have suggested (I have no experience of this), that a connector is loose behind the clocks (especially if the clocks have been removed at some point.  You'll have to diagnose the problem first as you wouldn't want to get the abs ecu off, especially if it's not at fault. I can think of better things i'd rather do!

If you put your location in someone near you might be able to have a look at it. There's lots of helpful people on here :y

ahh things could be looking up, as in the ashtray there are a couple blown bulbs from the clocks and 2 of the screws( which i think are behind the vents? , which suggests the clocks have been off, i will remove them tomorrow, and have a look at whats what..

i will also give the abs sensors a clean and hopefully , that may be all the problem is..

my location is bridgwater in somerset

thanks very much for the advice so far, this is why i enjoy car forums so much, the experiance of the members is priceless. :y
