Big oil leak at front of engine
« on: 14 October 2010, 14:55:43 »

Lip at top of sump is flooded in oil.

Bit oily up to the cable tray accross the front.

Not had cam belt cover off yet.

What is most likely to be leaking?

Thanks

Either the cam covers leaking into the valley, oil cooler doing the same or crankshaft seals.  :-[

Not the usual cam covers and running down the block, is it? Oil does have an amazing ability to end up getting everywhere.. although if there's a big puddle of it, maybe not.

[edit] I'm too slow.. :)

Oil pressure switch is another favourite.

Camshaft oil seals?

Could well be crank seal as well. :y

Pulley could be flinging the oil up the front of the engine.

Had EXACTLY the same problem, as mentioned could be a few things BUT in my case it was the camgaskets. They may leak VERY gradually but over time it sneaks down the engine and in my case, as with you, sat on top of the sump. Tends to get rather smelly.

Although it can sneak from the smallest of leaks, you may well be able to feel around the gaskets and come up with greasy/oily fingers from the outside without taking the cover off. You don't really want to disturb it if its not at fault. You may be able to confirm they are leaking within 2 mins.  In my case drivers side front.

Had the same on mine - plus great puddle of oil on undertray by crank pulley.  Did breathers and cam cover gaskets - cured it, now dry in that area :y

I've a similar oil leak I'm investigating at the moment. The inside of the timing cover has oil at the top and sides and the oil seems to be running down from the top of the engine so I'm assuming its camshaft seals. There seems to be oil sprayed upwards above the level of the cam sprockets

I did the cam cover gaskets a few years ago and can't see any leaks from them; everything is nice and dry.

As already mentioned my other thought is the crank oil seal, but would it spray oil that far up the timing cover? Is it worth changing at the same time as the camshaft seals?

Any hints, tips or suggestions greatly appreciated.
