Uneven idle
« on: 31 October 2010, 07:25:05 »

My car has been suffering from terribly rough idle to the point that it sounds like it will cut out. At which point I rev the nuts of it in frustration and it temporarily cures it. When it was in the garage recently for a new rocker cover gasket, I asked them to clean the EGR valve as I'd read on here it could be a culprit. To no avail. They did say a breather hose has degraded and could be causing it. They wanted £85 to do it as they have to remove the the throttle body, which I simply can't afford if it turns out it isn't that either. Does it sound like it could be a breather hose?

What the f* :o

The pipe that runs from the cam cover to the throttle body costs about 75 pence!!

It can also be easily replaced without removing throttle body, can be done in about 30 seconds!

Where abouts are you?

Worth cleaning breathers and throttle body, see Auto Addicts guide on this site.  Don't pay morons to do this, its a DIY job ;)

There was plenty of oil on them, in fact they were having a bath in the stuff as the rocker cover gasket had gone. I got the Vauxhall dealer in Hinckley to sort that while I was up there on a course for a week. It was they who suggested the breather hose but sadly as I'm no mechanic it all looks a mass of hoses and I can't find a manual for my model.
It's such a lovely car but I've spent so much on it, it all starts to wear a bit thin when it's like an egg timer for my limited funds.
