i can't get in
« on: 01 November 2010, 16:37:28 »

evenin all,can anyone give me some advice on door mechs.the problem is the off side door is in the closed position and the handles in and out dont work anymore .there is some resistance on them but not enough.the local garage says its the mech and the only way at it is to butcher the interior panel and whack the lock with a hammer and screwdriver till it gives in.seems harsh but plausible.do you reckon there right and any ideas on a replacement panel?thanks folks :-/

Ultimately your local garage is correct, but you may be lucky in that it'll unlock via the rest of the central locking along with a bit of help from you pulling up the pin at the same time.  :-/

It sounds like both rods have come away, or become bent if there is still resistance! Pretty unlucky for it to happen to both! This happened to me only on the outer handle so could open the door from inside.

I think your problem is that obviously to take the door card off you need the door open which you can't! I'm only familiar with facelifts, I don't know what your car is but could you not try and take off the door speaker cover or something and try and get a grip on the rod and see if that works?

Or you could find out where the rod is (it's been a while since i've had my door card off!) and make a small hole, insert some long nose pliers or similar, then pull/push the rod? Then it wouldn't be so bad compared to butchering it!

This is of course assuming the lock is ok, if it is I don't think your garage is right in saying about whacking it with a hammer? Why? You can just push the mech down and it will open.

92? That would make it a Carlton ;D

You say the button pops up ok? Have you tried giving it a tug upwards when unlocked and trying the handle again?

Could it be a 2002 rather than a 1992? I have door parts here. Do you ever get up my way?

I don't think "whacking it" will help anyway, TBH. ;) By the time you've opened it using brute force you'll need a new door.

What exactly is the problem? Is the locking button stuck down and deadlocked such that you can't unlock the door, or is the door unlocking but the door handle(s) is not connected so it won't open?

I would suggest taking the lock mechanism out of another door and having a good look over it so you know how it works and where everything is. Then you should be able to feel your way round to unlock it and operate the catch.

Only slight fly in the ointment might be if it's deadlocked but even then you should be able to force it unlocked by pulling hard on the lever. Failing that, take out a section of door card and remove the central locking motor from the door lock and that will free it.

I was thinking a trip up and I'll get it open and figure whats wrong with it. ;)
