Fuel pump gone?
« on: 06 November 2010, 11:27:54 »

Apologies for starting a new thread but the saga of my non starter elite continues, I tried a replacement fuel pump relay with no joy. I am not hearing the fuel pump start up( click then a whirr) as the ignition is turned and have low fuel pressure as the schrader valve gives a dribble as opposed to a jet when depresed.

I am on the verge of getting this towed to an autospark but am wondering is this possibly just a buggered pump? I have done 145 k on the original and dont mind adding a few quid to the fortune spent on the 2 crank sensors I have bought already?

AC is working only when you starting the engine, in case of ignition on still won't start.

Don't know whether this will help, but why not try disconnecting the pipes which attach to the fuel filter which if IIRC is under the rear of the car on drivers side about 3 feet from bumper. Then get someone to turn on ignition. If the pump is working OK the you will get a torrent of fuel from one of the pipes. Just make sure there is nothing near that could cause the fuel to ignite and make sure the ignition is turned off quickly. When one of the pipes on my fuel filter became detached accidentally, I had about a gallon all over my garage floor before I realised why the car would'nt start!!
If you do get plenty of fuel out of the pump then I think you must have got either a blocked filter or fuel line. If no fuel from pump with pipes disconnected then either faulty pump or blockage in pipe from tank.HTH

Chers mate,I think the lack of fuel pressure points to the pump and the lack of any priming noise but then I am no expert on fuel systems

My last reply to your starting problems thread was how the AA established that the fuel pump was sticking, and therefore on its way out. :-/

The pump is straight forward to get at. Mr Haynes fabulous book of miracles tells you most of what you need to know. Probably a cracking how to on here somewhere. :)

Takes an hour to do, less if all goes to plan...

I took the cover plate off and gave it a couple of whacks from the top, lamped it from underneath with a length of 3x3, no difference :(

Until! Fuel pump doesn't start pumping "until" the engine is turning over?

Any fault codes? Are crank sensors genuine? Does it crank?

Cranks
Has a spark
Has fuel
Gen VX crank sensor fitted this week
Immobiliser light not flashing when cranking so that 'should' rule out the immobiliser
Fuel pump relay swapped this morning
Given the fuel pump a good whacking,no joy

Only fault codde was 53 I think "fuel pump relay voltage low " after the RAC dude had been fiddling about.

Are the fuel pumps on a v6 different to the 2.0 etc? Going scrappy hunting in the morning, if it turns out to be the FP I will invest in a new one

Dunno. Given your answers I guess your on the right lines, it's just we see a lot of these types of posts, and usually it's crank sensor based, ESP as the fuel won't activate until the ecu sees a credible crank signal. But you have changed the cps for a genuine one.... :-/

Apparently tech 2 can show cps live data to dis count it, but obviosly that may be difficult given your location is so far away from a tech 2 owning member...
