I change the oil regularly (every 3,000 miles generally) on my 2.2 petrol estate and I am using approximately 1 pint every 2,000 miles.  The car has now done 102,000 with the first 4 oil changes at the dreadful 20,000 mile interval (ex fleet car).  Despite this the engine runs sweet enough and the oil now stays reasonably clean between changes, I am just wondering if the oil consumption is a bit excessive.

I would have though so... I've never had to top my V6 up between changes at 5k with 166+k on the clock :-/

It does sound quite excessive unfortunately

My old t5 with 288k (ex plod) never needed a top up.

Are you sure it isn't a small leak somewhere? Does the exhaust smoke?

If it's burning too much oil that may explain why the inside of the exhaust pipe looks quite sooty (new system last year) compared to my wife's Vectra exhaust which is as clean as a whistle.  The fuel consumption appears normal with 34mpg on a run and 25mpg around town in the winter.

There is no sign of any smoke from the exhaust and the car still feels quite pokey for an automatic 4 pot even with a heavy load on.  Wonder if the valve seals are on the way out as I had an old CVH Sierra years ago and a new set of valve seals cured oil burning on that, dead easy job too with the correct tool!

or could there be a leak that is burned off before touching the ground or pooling somewhere?

As far as I can see there are no oil leaks.  I replaced the cam cover gasket with a genuine Vauxhall one just after I bought the car and the engine still looks very clean with no drips on the garage floor.
