Road noise/rumbling noise.
« on: 13 November 2010, 20:17:38 »

After having three part worn tyres fitted today(2 rear and 1 front) i have had this noise appear from when i drove out of the tyre place, which i can only describe as above.Thing is it only seems to happen at 25mph,and there is no vibration through the steering wheel. One thing i did notice when they were fitting em is they dident balance em,do you reckon balancing would cause this?At first i just thought it was road noise from the tyres, but at one point i had to pullover and check wheel nuts as it seemed to have got worse for a few seconds, but every one was tight, and also seemed to slightly be amplified when braking.Any thoughts folks. :-/

my guess is tyres are old and work hardened, hence the noise, get them  :-/changed

How much did they cost ?
Part worn can be a 'real' problem, and yes always, always, they should be balanced.

It's the Tyres!     ....IMO.

If it was balance the car would vibrate, usually at a higher speed than mentioned.

Having said that, it may disappear with use  :-/

I bought some wheels with linglongs fitted, been hanging around for a while, and made a similar noise, ESP pulling up on the brakes, sounded like doing up a zip but much deeper note. It improved with use....until I changed them.

I have to admit, I regularly use Part Worn tyres, but, the places that I use, balance them, test them for leaks and more importantly let you look at the tyres first (I give a quick check for splits and flat spots, but also feel the rubber, to make sure it feels reasonable still)...  (The only reason I use them is purely to keep my car legal while I am out of work).  I normally pay about £20-£22/tyre and as of yet...  I know that they are a gamble, but, something is better than nothing and a decent premium brand part worn IMO is a better option than a new budget brand tyre (assuming that it is round)...

Hi I had a similar problem on a pair low mileage firestones, that I had bought new. I guess they had done 12-15k when I became aware of a noise when steering to the right. To cut a long story short, it was the front tyres. Careful examinations showed that the individual tread blocks were raised along one endge (run your hand around the circumference of the tyre in both directions)  It felt like stroking a cat the "wrong way" and then the "right way" By swapping front to back the noise dissapeared. After a  few miles I moved the now back tyres to the front again but fitted them on the opposite sides.  The steering was all over the place for about a hundred miles then absolutely fine. I have finally replaced these two tyres today.
 I suggest:
Balance problems cause vibration not rumbling
Where is the noise coming from front or back?
Swap front and back tyres to see if there is an improvement. It's cheap, and  can be quite effective in diagnosis.
 Good luck with your diagnosis

PS I also chaged both front wheel bearings/ hubs in the process of sorting this problem out!!

Personally can't believe people fit part worn tyres!
you have no idea what life they have partly had, no matter how friendly your local dealer, and for not alot more you can have safe tyres. I would NEVER fit part worn tyres - its asking for trouble.
