missfire?
« on: 16 November 2010, 17:22:19 »

Hi all, AS above the car seems to missfire (feels like the TC is cutting in) when I put load on the engine. Starts and idles fine and feels like it is running fine when cruising at 60 but if you put your foot down you can feel the missfire. Did it last week for a minute or so when you started the car then went away and ran fine. Today it had done it for the whole journey to and from work.
Codes are:
144-immobiliser no signal(but the car runs)

73-Mass airflow voltage low(forgot to put the plug on last week)

71-inlet air temp voltage high(again, ran it with the plug of last week by mistake)

31-no RPM (I think this is expected with it stopped)

Can you runs the paperclip test with the engine running, it a 3l on a 97 plate.

Any ideas would be great.
Cheers in advance   Al

Yes you can paperclip it with the engine running.

Check the plug wells for oil or water and check the plug lead caps for splits/cracks/signs of scorching :y

Cheers, paperclip while running gives same results minus the no RPM code.
Checking the plug wells will have to wait till the engine cools down but the tops are clear and have been since I cleaned the plug wells after I changed the rocker gaskets a few years ago, Can oil get in by other means?
Plug leads look fine from the top while they are still fitted. Will pull them later/tomorrow and check them properly, think it will be to cold by the time the engine cools down.

Should you get an engine light with the MAF disconnected? I ran it to the shops tonight with the plug off to see if it made any difference (it didnt) but I didnt get any warning light on the dash.
Am wondering if I have nipped some wires when I had the intake and plenums in bits last week.

Nipped wires should raise a fault in most cases.

It sounds like a weak spark to me. If plug wells are OK might be worth checking the plugs themselves or the DIS pack.

I'm just up the road if you need a 2nd set of eyes over it, of course. :y

Cheers Kevin may come see you. Would tech 2 show up why its missing. what do you charge for a session if tech 2 would help.

For info it drove perfectly this morning going to work, all the way to the red line with no proplems, coming home it feels strangled. Is missng but feels like she wants to pick her skirts up and go, is just being held back. Kinda does feel like a weak spark for some reason, just not sure why it could be intermittant.
Think it is going to wait until the weekend now when I have some light, but any suggestions of what to look at would be great. If I am gonna dimantle it to check the DIS etc I may as well check anything else whoe I am at it, rather than keep trying it and taking it appart again.

Many thanks     Al

Well, after 2 days of running perfectly (I havent had it appart cause of the weather and needing to get to work in her) she has gotten a lot worse today.
I dont want to replace bits for no reason but am looking towards replacing the DIS. When I try to accelerate slowly all seems fine, but put your foot down harder and it missfires, does accelerate tho, just very slowly but the rev counter is all over the place.
Would this suggest it is the DIS rather than a fuel issue, The plugs and leads appear fine which is all I have had time to do so far as I understand the diS is a fiddly job.
Cheers again,   Al
