A bit more info may help. Does it squeak when you turn the steering wheel in any particular direction. Is it always there or just when cornering, going over bumps?

is it outside the car when it squeaks or the column itself? My mv6 does that. I'm gonna put some silicone spray on and see if that helps - not on the actual wheel though!

Yeah, mine does this as well steering in either direction. Sprayed some silicon onto the column but unfortunately still there. Most noticeable when I set off in the morning. Have kind of got used to it. A bit embarrasing though when you have passengers.

This happens with both of my cars. Especially first thing. As soon as the cabin warms up it stops :D :D I am sure it is nothing to worry about.

Didn't I read a post a few weeks back where the wheel was jamming but had started off as a squeek/squeel when turned? Iirc it was caused by a broken/cracked indicator retention ring (the gizmo that holds the indicator on when you turn the wheel ) :-/ I'm not sure if this is the problem, but worth checking? :y

Thanks for all the replys. Am sure youre right in that is nothing to worry about, its just annoying. I have sprayed with silicon est already , your right is does no good. Will investigate the indicator theory. Will post results.

You sure did, this has in some cases caused the steering to lock when the ring breaks up. A few near misses due to inability to turn the steering wheel.
Definitely worth checking.

This can often be cured by re-aligning the steering column.

There is a TIS bulletin on it.

I've got the same squeak on mine aswell. I've tried several times to cure it with no success.

Do you have anymore info on this Mark ?

It's a 5 page document - E0001367 - entitled "squeaking-noises when steering under cold and wet weather"

Won't let me copy/paste it. Tonight I'll be on the other system and I'll try some screen grabs ... unless I'm told it breaches copyright ???

From memory, its a case of slackening off all 3 mounting bolts for the steering column (remembering that one is a sheer bolt so needs drilling out and replacing with a normal bolt).

Then tightening the lower one first (behind fuse box) followed by the two upper ones.

What happens is that on the assembly line, some operatives (and hence why it was a bit random) were fitting the upper bolts and then basicaly putting stress on the steering column by bending/twisting it to get the bottom bolt in......the result is a squeek which is much worse in cold weather (and hence why some are noticing it more now  :y)

Basically it's as Mark says .. but here it is from TIS .. sorry but it takes 6 screen grabs to show it all ... and I've not "shrunk" them as last time folks complained they were not readable ... HTH ..

If this breaks copyright please let me know and I won't do it again .. :)
