I CANT BELIEVE ITS STILL LEAKING! NOT HAPPY
« on: 24 November 2010, 23:41:08 »

ive changed the oil filter again fitting hand tight but iam still seeing oil on the plastic guard directly under the bottom pulley ive done the following
1. rocker gaskets and breathers cleaned
2. removed the timing belt cover and couldnt see any signs of any oil cambelt dry as a bone inside of case dry no specs of oil or anything that points toward oil been flicked around in there
3. cleaned all gunk ect away from underside of engine and surrounding areas
4. ran the car on ramps for 20 mins - no oil drips evident after checking with a torch while the car was running .. bone dry apart from the oil filter showing signs of weeping only very very slightly  on the seal
5. changed the oil filter , went to work and back  and guess what ..... oil on the plastic case again  >:(

That'S your leak with no question there should be no weeping, it sounds like the mating surface aint right, can't offer any advice but someone will be along to tell you what's what

sorry i meant to add i changed the filter yesterday morning and its not showing any signs of weeping now so it ruled out that unfortunatly, if crank seal goes would it be easy to tell after removing the timing belt cover ie would the belt, pulleys back of casing ect be covered in oil?

o.k so been having a look around and it maybe that a piece of gasket from the last filter or filer's as it may now be have melted themlelves onto the mating surface, did you chech to see all was smooth before you fitted your new filter?

If I were you et the car warm before you remove anything :y The reason for this is if the car is warm the oil should find its way out and make it a little easier to spot where its coming from if that makes sense. ;)

the mating surface was spotless i had a real good look for  gouges deep scratches ect but it was spot on, car was warm when i removed cambelt cover just about warm enough to work on without getting too burnt . iam just at a loss with it now ive spent too many hours laid on my back trying to source the leak and iam no closer to finding it what is the norm when the crank seal goes? will it spray oil everywhere behind the cambelt cover, must point out its prob a penny size blob thats gathering on the plastic tray after maybe 50 miles or so

wherever you see weeping when that oil is warm it will come out (like water it seeks the lowest point of resistance) so if you think it's the crank then clean evrything well around there and watch for results but that goes for everything if you clean it all up well you should be able to trace it, gotta be easier than water leaks!

if it's dripping as in you don't see a run any where then wherever it'S dripping from you should be able to narrow it down as if it's dripping straight it must be right above right? or make a little slope from cardboard so it rips onto that and then you can see where the drip horizontally originates from but my geuss is if its coming from the crank it's only lower and hence not spraying anything, sorry i know nothing about these motors just going on previous experiences

i gave everthing a good scrub with the wifes t-towel :-X although i only wiped away old "gunk" and road dirt ect no "fresh" oil was found. After it leaked again with the new filter ive rooted around underneath again and theres still no visable oil apart from on the plastic cover everything is dry ? i can cope with most niggles but drops of oil get on my nerves leaving rainbows all over the drive  :'( i serously dont know what to try next i could really do without a garage bill this close to xmas

gotta say you could take it there and they'd say it's this and that but they're geussing as much as you if it's not a common problem as this site will tell you if it is personally it's not huge amounts but yes would get on my tits i would tape a card under there to see if i could trace it better, we have the same motor but i'm new to this so haven't spent much time under the car at the minute and quite reluctant to as it's just started to snow! but  i would really lay a card under there and see if you can trace it better as if it's not running it's gotta be dripping or the other solution is to lay a drip tray on your drive till you have funds to get "professional"help so your driveway doesn't suffer more i can't say but i will look tommorow to see whare this could come from and maybe come back to you!

had alook today at mine it could be dripping from the pipe going into the oil filter housing not really sure what the pipes for though! also have you checked the oil pan itself for leaks i take it the oil is landing on the plastic tray under the front of the motor best bet is to clean everything really well with a degreaser and then see if you can spot it, i can imagine the crank pulley seal would be a pain to do.

Check the Power Steering Pump for leaks & loose pipe joints, it is very close to the area you are finding oil although PSFluid is a different colour/consistency to engine oil  :-/

I had to replace my sump pan as it had become porous, seems to a common fault.
