1999 T hand brake failed MOT help please
« on: 25 November 2010, 15:04:03 »

Just failed on both outer track rod ends and hand brake.

Adjusted via hole in disc but not holding on the offside.
Replaced rear discs.pads.and shoes a few months back. Really poor setup unless i have fitted shoes incorrectly? Can you fit them wrong?
Or is there a special setup way of the handbrake

Thanks

rob

Take the disc off and check everything is as it should be with the h/brake shoes. It has been mentioned on here that, with some shoes, it is possible for the friction lining to break up.

Might be a problem with the linkage in that case.

Try getting someone to work the h/brake while you look underneath to see if its moving....

don't forget when you adjust the star adjuster thing, to get the same action (tightening or slackening), the star adjuster on one side of the car will need turning the opposite way (up/down) to the opposing side.

It's actually the same way, but just seems different because you're on the other side, does that make sense?

You could end up slackening it when you're trying to tighten it and vice versa.

Thanks all.

Ok done all the guide says except slaken cable off first then tighten up after. All was free and greasedand star adjusted.

Is the cable looped? or adjusted each side? Cant see pix on my mobile.

?????? :-/ :-/ :-/   Sorry but I do not understand.  You MUST slaken the cable off first at the yoke linkage under the car before you can adjust the brakes at the wheels ;) ;)

In my experience, and that of others, you cannot adjust the handbrake operation properly without doing it in that sequence ::) ::)

Yep, the cable needs to be slack to ensure that you can get max travel on the shoe actuator levers.

If you dont do this then your wasting your time  :y

sorry a bit clearer my end,

when i replaced the discs, pads and shoes i did not slacken the cable off or adjust it, i thought you just adjusted via holes in disc/drum etc, so i will now have to start from the start in the morning as i'm still at work right now, thanks all

oops got the fail sheet back and the motor to find handbrake didn't fail but just an adviser or it, it only failed on the track rod ends,

got them local for £13 each and changed them, but as i had to do it on the drive and in the dark after work friday, i must have miss counted them going back on, so had to get the tracking set sat morn before the MOT, all done now apart from handbrake setup, but did get the tyre fitter to wind off some of the handbrake for me,

did notice no heat shields on my 2.5 tractor is this norm? or are they only of the v6?
