Cross threaded wheel nut
« on: 28 November 2010, 20:45:22 »

Why do we still call them nuts  :D

One of the wheel bolts has cross threaded and I can't tighten it, does anyone know what size of Tap I will need to clean out the threads on the hub.

not off hand, but IIRC it's a metric fine. I've a bucket full of standard metric taps & I didn't have one that fitted. I'd to borrow one from a local garage when No 1 Son said he didn't use my windy gun to put his wheel back on his car.

Thanks Andy, if it's metric fine, then I'll also be out begging or borrowing.

It's funny how you forget when you don't use them everyday. I can remember that tapping size for standard M12 is 10.2 mm which after I've Googled it  .... http://www.efunda.com/designstandards/screws/screwm_coarse.cfm shows that M12 is 1.75mm pitch. As Lee pointed out, a wheel bolt is 1.5mm pitch, so it looks like you'll have to cap in hand tomorrow!  ;)  ;)  ;)
