Is the noise from one side much more than the other?

Reason I ask is that when an exhaust manifold stud broke on ours (unbeknownst to me), and the gasket started leaking, I thought it was a (really bad) tappet noise until someone with better knowledge/experience than me told me "exhaust manifold gasket leak" within seconds of listening to it.

I guess the only other thing to try is an oil pressure gauge/test to convince yourself that the oil pump's not misbehaving somehow?

when my manifold gasket started to go, it started out as a ticking noise which i thought was the lifters, sounded like tappets, which progressively got worse i even treated it with wynns, but that was the gasket blown drivers side at the back stud, so i would look there first  :y

If not the fanimold chuck a bottle of wynns in it.

But they do make a horrendous clatter after a rebuild as there is no oil pressure in them. It will quieten down on it's own eventually, if you can bare the noise.

Do you use supermarket fuel?

Try a main brand like ESSO,  Please see my thread about ESSO petrol and my tappety noise! ;)  It may work, it may not :D :D ;)

Oil pump pressure test? Haynes usually gives the spec. Although I've not been down this road with an omega. Most garages carry a pressure tester, fits on the oil pressure sensor.

Flushing is usually advised against on here as it can block the gause on the oil pick up pipe.

But from your initial post the problem was there from the outset? Rather than as a result of something else.

What's the history? Is it purely neglected oil changes that caused it do you know?
