Td Crank pulley Question ?

Mate has a P38 Range Rover His alt light came on and steering got heavy. Garage told him that rubber thing on end of crank pulley was shot & it was a pig to remove! Anyone heard of this? It is a 95 model.

The crank pulley will be made of three parts.  The inner and outer parts are metal and are separated by a high density rubber which acts as a harmonic damper.

Not sure why they say the pulley is a pig to remove though.

There was talk of , No way to lock the crank & special tool!!!!!

I can't remember if you need to remove the crank bolt to get this pulley off.

The crank lock is a special pin that fits in flywheel...

Hmm a damn good windy gun usually undoes the bolt no problem? I never lock the crank either just a full tank on the compressor, windy gun on full torque and blast away!!

Worth having a look at the belt tensioner. these tend  to pop out releasing the tension on the belt, giving exactly the symptoms you describe.
Push the top end of it back over to the left and it will pop back in.

I got the impression that the garage was afraid the job was too awkward, but misdiagnosis is possible.
