Tyre Size
« on: 18 December 2010, 16:05:59 »

Seeing that we may be getting more snow in the coming weeks I am considering getting a set of snow tyres fitted to my standard 16 inch Elite softstars which have been in the shed for a while now.

As standard tyres were 225/55/16 would this be the best size to consider or should they be 205 as read thinner tyres work better in snow.

In Finland we also have snow sometimes in winter.   Take care of the load index of the tyres. In my owners manual (car bought here in Finland, which belongs to EU) following tyres are recommended:
195/65R15 91V
205/65R15 94V
225/55R16 94V
235/45R17 93V
Lowest load index here is 91 which means (table found in internet) 615 kg/tyre. According to the owners manual max axle loads are 1080 kg in front and 1155 kg in rear. Seems to be logical if I understood it correctly. So perhaps the tyres with too low load index are not safe.

205 should be fine.. I'm using 195 65 15 for snow tires..no probs..

must add winter tires are very grippy so 225 will glue you on dry asphalt..

I managed to locate 225 Cooper Avon Ice tyres for £150 each. I wanted Continentals but they were completely unavailable.

If you go with 205 tyres make sure you tell your insurance company and get their OK as you are changing the vehicle specification, they may require an additional premium and can get a bit jobsworth.

A bit pathetic, (on the part of the insurance firms), but a top tip none the less.

Luckily my broker is cool about stuff like this.
