Omega Tow Eye
« on: 31 December 2010, 21:59:38 »

Hi,

Could someone let me know if the Towing Eye from more modern Vauxhall's (eg Zafira etc), would be the same as that for my Omega?

I don't have one. Needed to tow my nephew today, had to put the tow rope round the rear suspension arm. Never thought I would need the tow eye until today.

On Ebay there's only reference to a towing eye for later Vauxhall cars (not omega), but is it the same?

Friend who has a miggy says the thread diameter is about 14mm and with a very course pitch about 3mm.

If I buy one off ebay for a zafira (about £10) will it fit (eg is it standard across all VX's over the years?).

Thanks.

Mark

All I can tell you about it is, it's a left hand thread.
Why not ask one of the breakers on here if they have one.

Wow, quick responses on new years eve too, thanks guys.

Kneepad : I can understand why it's a left hand thread - to counteract the natural unwinding of a standard tow rope under tension. (but I had to think that one through). Never thought about that until now - thanks.

RobG - if you have a spare whats the damage? Might need to use it next weekend?

Why would a tow rope unwind an eye rather than tighten it?

A rope is wound in one direction and, when under tension, that wind tries to undo.

If the towing eye screws into the car and the winding of the rope is such, then, on tension, will tend to unscrew the eye, hence tow eyes are left hand thread whilst most ropes are right hand.

Hope that makes sense!!   :D

It sounds reasonable, and has somewhat ameliorated my ire at having spent 5 minutes in the snow, and in the dark, trying to be a good samaritan in attaching my lady neighbour's VW towing eye when she was stuck! Then finding it was LH. ::) ::) ::)
