can't agree more with skyblue. ;D ;D :y :y

I have been looking at getting another meg (seen 2 possibilities) as I have had the same problem (loads of white smoke but was told by my mechanic head needed recon not just simple gasket change).  I have sourced engineer to do do recon for £160 (can anyone give opinion as to reasonableness) and I will do job myself (dismantle and reassembly etc) plus some other bits and bobs ::) ::) ::)

All this is proviso I am unsuccesfull in obtaining either of the two seen which are cheaper than carrying out job on current. ::)

My current meg is fairly old (R reg 2.0 )

£160 is an average price for a head re-con. But bear in mind this is just the re-con and doesn't cover removal or refitting. You will need a new head gasket set, new head bolts, new cam sprocket bolts and the appropriate torque settings and knowledge to refit the head. The quoted price is also dependant on the condition of the head being re-con'd, if there is a crack or corrosion then the price will go up.

yep, price is just to recon its head.
when I last visited Halfords, they did a gasket headset for appx £54.  Vauxparts £30 - £40

Although, I have never tackled a job this big, i am looking to do that to obviously keep cost down.  I have been quoted a price to do job privately which is far cheaper than a garage price  but I still would want to avoid that if possible although I'm not avderse to remunerate.

I have been sourcing price for correct tools to do job (machine mart for crank and cam locking tools etc).

There are other jobs and parts needing changing which is pushing up price, but as it is said it's good to get to know your engine, and thats the kind of thing I like but if it is not feasible then will go the scrapping route although painful. :( :(

just started up and the smoke that came out ... you couldnt see the end of the drive.. the header tank emptied into the engine, the oil is just thick sludge, so i would say the gasket has gone.. i dont have the money to repair so was thinking of scrapping.

Well, had a fun day with Shane. HG definately gone, coolant system was empty, oil had doubled in quantity and was the colour of a strong latte  :o

So off came it's head, HG was trashed, cheapo HG as well and it didn't look like it had been fitted properly hence the failure. Anyway, 5 hours later (including many, many tea breaks and a bacon barm or two) she was running sweet as a nut. Only used cheapo oil and coolant this time as it'll need changing in a couple of hundred miles to finish flushing the system out.

Still it was a good day and an absolute pleasure to meet Shane and Mrs 1000 :y
