said hi in the newbies bit, asking for help here
« on: 30 December 2010, 17:56:23 »

just got it, great looking car, very comfortable smooth then im trying to pull away and no gears and the engine heats up...what!!

2001 y reg 2.2 cd automatic petrol, had a look and seemed to point at the gearbox being empty of oil, got it checked, not a problem, loads in, sump gasket, bell housing gasket not leaking trans fluid, its engine oil thats dripping, probably dripping through onto the clutch causing it to slip??

pulling away in drive, 3 2 1 is a an engine revving experience till the gearbox catches and away you go, slowly, once youre away, runs great, till you come to a red light or junction then, you know what, funny, you can reverse all day and it doesnt slip once

any ideas ????

No clutch on an auto ;)

Are you getting any lights on dash when it plays up? EML? Gearbox warning?

yes, a red light of a car with a spanner sticking out of it, then the engine started to heat up, didnt go very high, burning smell, gearbox oil def wasnt engine oil, that was the only light, seems to be a bit of oil around the left side of the engine block, as you look onto it, but that miteve been there before, totally lost

Where are you? As it's a 2.2 you'll need the codes reading with a proper code reader. Many of use have something suitable to read the codes, hence asking where you are :y

Does that mean it was checked without the engine running?

low oil would take a time to load up the torque converter so drive would be delayed.

I think.

Check the "how to" in the Maintenance section

Start with a code read IMO. Cam sensor can send the auto box loopy on the 2.2 for instance, but yes the auto box fluid level should be checked engine running. There is a guide if that helps?

Check coolant means the coolant (antifreeze) is low. If thats fine, just check the float is free to move up and down in the coolant bottle.

It sounds like the cars in limp home mode as others have said you need to get codes read ;)

Not got one just get the car up on ramps take filler plug out (with engine running) which is on the o/s between exhaust and g/box and fill with dexron III until oil comes out then sumps full.
