Hi All,

Not been on for a while as I lost my job about 7 months ago and could'nt afford to run the Omega. however, figures crossed I've finally found a new job so the first thing is to treat SWMBO and secondly get my other girl back on the road.

I've got a couple of questions please.  Since about 7 months ago the omegas been sat on the drive, I've started her and moved her forward, back, left and right but she's not had a proper run. Is there anything I should do before taking her for a long drive?

Secondly she's been SORN'd so I now need to Tax, Insure and MOT. Insurance not a problem. Am I correct in thinking that you can drive an untaxed car on the road as long as it is to a prearranged MOT appointment?

Personally to cover all bases when resurecting a car from a lay-off of a few months, especially a miggy, I would give it a full service.  Plugs, oil, all filters, brake clean all round, breathers cleaned throughout, and if any signs of the dreaded oil in plug wells, new can cover gaskets.

This will also prepare it for the MOT, and yes you can drive an untaxed car to the MOT station, but you do need insurance for the day at least

Any car on the road, ie has its wheels on the ground has to be taxed. You can drive a car with an expired MOT to be tested if its pre-arranged, but have a feeling it may need to be trailered there if it has no tax...  :-/

Obviously if it fails due to something dangerously goosed then you'll have to leave it there. But that goes for any car on the road with a current MOT.

I have recently put my omega back on the road from a sorn, the MOT ran out while on it.  I got intouch with the MOT place and gave my Reg No. House it was coming from and back too and got a time when booking it in.  As for the insurance you do need this, it might pay to ask you insurance Co. about insuring it, tell them that you want to take your car for an MOT as it has been on SORN and it has no MOT on it.  By telling my Company this, I found out that I could insure another car on the policy I have for a week for £25, this gave me a cover note which I used to Tax the car.  If the car had not passed I would have only lost that £25 and not had to go through changing policies.  Sorry so long winded.  One more thing I was told is that you must take the most direct route to test station and back home. Firstly congrats on the new job. I just hope it isn't for the position of 'fluffer' for gay porn movies?  (although if that's lesbo 'gay' then that might not be so bad  :-/ )

Anyway, to be serious, regarding insurance, just Google "day insurance" and it will come up with about a dozen firms. All of them in my experiance are pretty much of a muchness, (assuming that you aren't an 18 yr old 'yoof' trying to insure a Ferrari?).

I did this with a Rover 75 a few years back that I was taking to auction. £14 IIRC for two days cover.

And personally I'd also heed the sound advice of Lizzie with regards to the service work.

Thanks for the info.  With the help of Entwood the cam cover gaskets and spark plugs were only changed about a couple of months before the Car was sorn'd (9 months ago). Should I still consider changing said items?

I wouldn't change them again if they aren't leaking,they probably have done very few miles anyway

Hello young man ..... nice to see you back .. Glad to hear about the job and the fact that your nice motor will soon be back on t'road .. 

Cam covers /breathers will be fine. I would probably do the following

Charge battery up for a good 48 hours if not 72
Remove immobilisor chip from key and keep very safe
Use the key to turn the engine over in short - 5 sec - bursts a good 10-12 times, then a couple of 15 sec bursts ... this is to get some oil around the internals BEFORE the engine fires up and it gets "under load".

Stick the chip back in the key. Start the engine but leave it to idle for a few minutes before driving. Check for coolant leaks ..  it has been VERY cold and you might have had an unknown freeze.

If the parking brake has been left on you may need a fairly big boot of power to free it .. they tend to corrode on ... if it does there will be a BIG bang as it releases. Drive VERY carefully and slowly until you are CERTAIN the brakes are good,  not only does the handbrake corrode the discs do as well .. braking will not be 100% for some while and you might (??) need to replace the discs if they have corroded badly ..

Drive around gently at first watching carefully for engine temp problems and oil pressure.

I think we did an oil/filter change as well ?? If not one of them might be worth it.

Air con pollen filter is probably damp, if in good nick stick it in the airing cupbaord overnight .. if not replace it

Check scuttle drain.

Can't think of much else other than treat her gently to start with .. If you need a hand yell .
