Rear Springs
« on: 14 February 2011, 18:18:06 »

Do rear springs have a life expectancy.

I am convinced as a result of the atrociuos condition of the roads the rear end of my Elite is now not handling as it should.A close inspection of the springs shows nothing is broken or missing so I am now looking at the prospect of replacing shocks and springs.

Question is if I buy second hand how do you tell condition of springs as I can only really think if they are not broken do they start to loose there "spring".
Shockers show no leaks and raise and lower with movement of lever sensor so hope they are sound.

Then again that all depends how old they are, if you are lucky enough to find a car at the scrappers that has obviously had relatively recent new parts fitted then why not :)

Indeed, but you have no way of telling. Certainly if they were more than a few months old, buy new.

I'm likely going to be binning my SL springs soon. 8months old. I wouldn't fit them to another car...

If they were relatively new it would be bleeding obvious ::)

So the spare set of front springs I have in the garage, they look (almost) brand new as I've cleaned them. Want to bu them, they have only done 155k, and are only 13yrs old.

Off the car they look a decent pair, both identical length etc. On the car, one side sits around 20mm then other.

So, no, it ain't bleeding obvious ;)

So next time I scrap a car, I can remove my Irmscher springs. I wiped them down with WD40 partially to help with corrosion, and partially so the garage doesn't look like a scrapyard (epic fail there...)

Let's try it another way then... He replaced the springs he has kept with Irmscher ones but doesn't want to scrap the Irmsher ones when the car goes so he can remove them and replace with the original ones :y :y

Ah, but why would you want to keep 2nd hand Irmsher springs if you dont reccomend fitting 2nd hand springs.
What do you intend to do with them :-/
