Things to look out for on a 2.5td
« on: 21 February 2011, 10:29:22 »

Hi,
Just joined the forum, having bought a 2.5td estate.
Was going to buy a 525 but the insurance is RIP. so that's out the window.

Always had a thing for the Omega anyways, so this works out just fine.

Just wanted to know what are the main things i should either check or look out for as a diesel driver.
I'm used to diesel engines, as much as i am to petrols. So thats not too much of a problem.

Thanks

Oil changes. That engine loves oil changes.

Problems:
Temp approaching 100C. It must not. Ever. Could be coolant issue, could be oil issue.
Radiator, tends to sludge up at around 120C. If you have cooling issues, check for cold spots
Oil, if not changed regular, tend to block the cooling jets, causing overheating.
Cracked heads. Beemer engine, prone to head cracking if overheated.
Autos - AR25 tends to give up around 120-150k. When it happens, replace with AR35
Intercooler fan (if fitted), tends to seize. Free it up, then remove viscous fan.

Then all the usual Omega issues of wishbone bushes, alignment etc.

My old 2.5TD tractor, I chipped it, and it became a different car. Chipping will shag auto boxes, so ensure you have a manual or AR35 before doing that!

yes it is a manual,
and i was wondering about the power difference between the MEG and the 525.
I heard its something to do with the smaller misplaced intercooler on the MEG as opposed to the up front larger one on the 525tds.
And then maybe something ECU wise....?is this true, and if so is there an easy upgrade, as i do like a bit of poke.

Usually with diesels it all about fuel and air.....so up fueling and up turbo...? at a guess lol

ECU is downgraded in Omega. Easy enough to put it back to BMW spec, the guy I know charges £70 for the chip. Tends to improve economy as well, though the MID/Computer in the car will talk utter crap after chipping.

Motor detuned to 128 BHP for the Omega. 143 BHP in the Beemer.

'Plus 5' chip restores it to 143 BHP plus 5%, so you'd then be looking at around 150 horses.

Chipped my former TD and it becomes a different car!  :D

To br honest that's what i thought it would be.
I've found the chip for the ecu, involves takiing the ecu apart and replacing the pinned unit (can never remember the proper name). that's about £70 or so.

Can i do this safely then? it wont reduce the life of the engine massively, seeing as the bimmer is pretty much this standard anyway?

I'm assuming its something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OPEL-VAUXHALL-OMEGA-2-5TD-Chiptuning-Performance-CHIP-/320602862810?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aa56b74da

although maybe sourced more locally lol. I saw in the guides section something about removing this fromt he ecu to replace. seems easy enough, i'm pretty handy with a soldering iron if needs be too.

Get the chip from TBs source, alot of the forum members have them from him (myself included) and they are proven to work ;)
