1999 OMEGA CDX V6 Auto - Tips on removing plugs ??
« on: 24 February 2011, 13:09:19 »

Hi People. Having ascertained from this site that I may have the same cam gasket leaking problem as before, I need to verify that the plug wells are indeed filling up with oil before proceeding.

Bearing in mind I am a complete newbie are there any issues that I should be aware of before attempting this operation ? Also which socket spanner/s will I need ?

I ask because I cant find a simple "walkthrough" on this site unless someone knows of one ?

Many thanks  :y

Mines a facelift 2.6, so I don't know how different they are in terms of under bonnet layout, therefore this info may not be 100% accurate.

Undo the jubilee clips that hold the 90 degree rubber pipes from the bagpipes to the throttle body. These could be 8mm, 10mm, an imperial size, who knows?

Unclip plastic connector that attaches to the underside of the throttle body, along with the jubilee or 'R' clips that hold on the two small bore coolant pipes. If they are 'R' clips then I would advise getting an proper 'R' clip pliers.

Plenum off;

Remove the four pipes that connect to the back of the plenum via the black plastic breather.

On the passanger side is a black hose. I cant remember if you need a 17mm or a 19mm open ended spanner to get this off.

Small flat bladed screwdriver to prise off the four plastic clips. Then an E10 or maybe E12 female Torx socket to undo the four bolts that hold the plenum to the intake trumpet.

Gently lift up plenum and remove any further pipes that may still be attatched, (such as the thin vaceum pipes)

Phones ringing, got to go. I'm sure someone else will finish off the rest. sorry.

Its abit of a PITA, as are most jobs on these cars!! ;D

You can gently pull most things to one side to get at the plugs. The nearside is abit harder, I unbolted the cable tray that runs over the plugs. Then removed the wiring loom from the tray and pulled the tray out. You should then be able to gently tie the wiring loom over to the right giving you access to the plugs. You might also have to undo the large black air pipe that runs to the brake servo....

Its fiddley, and a lot of hassle to get at the plugs!  ;)

It probably sounds worse than it actually is!!  ;)  Just take it steady and be methodical.  Above all remember how things go back together... ;D Take photos as you go.. ;)

The plugs are awkward to get to, but only because you have to move a few bits and bobs out of the way first, but none of the bits and bobs are hard to move.

Follow the guide step-by-step, give yourself a couple of hours, drink plenty of tea and you'll be fine, honest.  :y

I'd be willing to pop round if you are local to me.

Honestly, I'm crap with cars, but the job does seem worse reading about it than actually doing it.

I reckon first time, for a novice, you'd be looking at 3 hours tops to do all six plugs.
