coolant leak with pics
« on: 28 February 2011, 16:09:25 »

got a coolant leak on my mv6,and decided to see where it coming from...looked,and as well as leaking at the back(from what i seen last time on ramps)noticed this, the brown is coolant, although only looks brown on photo,it clear in normal light...

so took top off for closer look and seen this

going to pressure test system on friday when get some bits from work, but does it look like the thermostat leaking, and running down front engine,or is that old looking, and could be running down back to the front...
hope it not cost to much as need to sell car so don't really want to be spending a fortune

That looks to me like the oil cooler.

Is the leak at the back tied up with that or a separate one. ?

The favourite leak on the back is from the HBV (heater bypass valve) a three approx one inch black tube affair the size of a small fist. It is located in mid air at the back of the engine below the scuttle.

My 2.5 has a leak at the back which I think is either a core plug or the silver water pipe that goes around there. Can't tell without taking engine out!

When you pressure test no more than 1.7 bar I think.

it hard to tell where from the back, but the HBV been changed, but when went for mot and was on ramp, noticed where it had been leaking above starter as that was all rusty looking with coolant....was hoping by taking it all apart would be able to see the back...

would there not be a change in coolant colour if it was the oil cooler,as that still clear in reservoir,or can they just leak...the brown in between cooler and thermostat so really hard to tell till test done

my thermostat leaks a touch. and with plenty of pink coolant in it you can see it making its way down the front covers towards the tray.

If the leak is from the cooler cover plate rather than the cooler itself then the colour of the coolant wont change.
I would clean the discolouration up, run the car for a while and then check again to try to ascertain where its leaking from.

When you say the 'coolant' leak is clear, are you saying you only have clear water in the system with no coolant additive? :-/

can i just not do that from a pressure check to save putting it all back on only to take it off again

i had a recient leak at the rear of the engine recintly, but it only sprayed out when reved hard, or driven with high revs (a tad over 70 ) there was a tiny split in the pipe thet goes fron the block to the hbv, the curly pipe (youl know it when u see it), worth checking then also once system is pressurised.
