I was wondering even if successfully removed, is there any chance of it then becoming unsecure and thereby can easily come off

At various times my accelerator cable has dug its heels in & refused point blank to come off, but given 10 mins & a fresh approach it's come straight off. 
When you get if off  , put a dab of grease inside the cup before you re-fit it.

i had the same problem but be careful you dont bend the metal wwork relating to the throttle but i ended up prising the inner cirlip with a fine screwdriver to get my old one off
