Okay, so tell me,
« on: 22 January 2008, 20:59:53 »

Dear all.

long time no see.....   I've been  tied up for a year....   that and nothing fell off the elite for ages....

So who wants to enlighten me as to everything I'd need to know about bringing a late model 3.2 police spec estate  Meega anywhere even remotely near an Elite's level of creature comforts, and the likely costs involved.....

and who I need to know, where I have to go, and how much beer it's gonna cost me....

and all that Jazz

Cheers, and happy new year, happy Xmas, happy birthday, anniversary, and so on...

:D

I'd do it the other way round... Get a 3.2 Elite and put the bits you want from 'Police Spec' on it (Presumably Manual / LSD / MV6 Suspension).

I've given this some thought too... full kit for a manual conversion can be had cheap (cos they very seldom break, so loads of good ones in scrappies), LSD not too expensive if you can find one. Suspension -- well if you're changing it might as well go for better than what's fitted to the MV6, either Irmscher stuff or Eibach/Bilstein depending on how much you value ride comfort. Personally I'd also want to get rid of the hideous wood trim, and fit some sports seats to replace the armchairs you get in the Elite.

The advantage of doing it the other way is that the car itself can be bought very cheaply, and getting it with a manual box already fitted saves a lot of labour. Facelift models are reasonably specced compared to pre-facelift plod models (climate, audio controls etc), so probably not too hard to add the interesting bits.

Fair bit of work either way though.

Hello all :D

Yeah, Mad grilling in Telford sounds like a plan.... :D

here's the score (perhaps a cat out of bag time  a bit early)

that annoying last little leak at the back end of the engine, eventually(last week) , got worse, and, AFTER changing every damn pipe, and HBV and blah blah,   the car has been rather expensively pronounced DOA. Head gasket and/or head cracked type  failure.  it has a retirement home to go to , where i'm sure it'll get plenty of TLC.

the price quoted to fix it is astronomical....   about the same as the amount of money i have access to, for replace or repair...  but I cannot bring myself to spend more on the Elite....

so I'm looking for another one, or something else or whatever..

and I've seen one i kind of fancy.....    ex plod  ( NOT local BTW )

but I'm used to the comforts of my Mini face lift 3.0 elite....

and Life without Sat Nav isn;t worth driving for ;)

thus the query really......

I guess it really comes down to one thing: How much do you want a manual gearbox against everything else?

For me, if I wanted a 3.2 manual, I'd probably buy a tidy car and convert it to manual but that puts most of the expense (and work) up front in one job. The advantage of doing it the other way is that you have a car on the road with less initial outlay and you can replace bits of trim, seats, etc. as you get round to them.

I guess I'd just much prefer to do the gearbox change than sorting lots of niggling issues with the rest of the car but that's just me.

It's worth noting that the garage has already removed the heads, on this car.

You've found a good home for it though? I wouldn't know anything about that  ::)

Oh, and it's not going to be retired yet. It'll be rebuilt with a new set of heads and put back on the road to cart my doggies around :)

Put it this way, I'd rather have an "UberPovertySpec" 2.0 8v manual than an Elite++ 5.7 V8 auto :P

Fitting the manual isn't too bad a job, from what I've been told. As long as you get a donor car that you can get all the necessary bits from, it can be done in a weekend with just 2 guys and a lift.

I'd still want to get rid of the fake wood and armchair seats from the elite though. Then uprate the suspension and fit a slipper. Possibly swap the front bumper for an MV6 one, although that wouldn't really be a big deal.

Dual-fuel it and you'd have a stonking car that's good to drive, fully specced and cheap to run :)

Come now, if slotted a LS1 6.0 Supercharged V8 in my project car, you would be iching to have a go  ;)

Only to place bets on how quickly it chews up and spits out the gearbox before you even get it out of neutral. They can barely handle the power of a V6 judging by the number of failures on this board ;).

Power is nothing without control... you wouldn't want your nice V8 running around on bald remoulds I hope :D.

PS I think you should put your money where your mouth is... get that V8 slotted in there, but don't forget to keep the 6-speed box and uprated clutch attached!
