Size of your wheels
« on: 08 October 2006, 19:37:16 »

I read an article today....Honest John.....only get to read it when i visit my parents coz i dont buy the Telegraph....but in it a reader had written in saying basically the following.

He had bought a 2nd hand car.....when the insurance asked him about any mods done to it....he told em that it had factory fit larger wheels on it (18's instead of 17's i think), but it was a factory fit option that the original owner had paid for.

Insurance comp charged him an extra £70 or £80 for it...

In the letter the owner said if he hadnt told the insurance comp his insurance might have been invalid...HJ's answer was... true.....insurance comps will sometimes try anything to get out of paying up.

I would have never of thought of declaring factory fit options as modifications!!  :o

Another reason I try to keep my car standard, even though a single replacement for my buckled wheel was £236.01. Not that I'm bitter about it  >:(

The other problem is how do you know what mods the previous owner has carried out. Its ok if your are into cars but what if you are just the average motorist who drops the car off at the garage a couple of times a year for a service and knows nothing about the car except it gets you from A to B. When i'm asked by my insurance if my car is standard I say "as far as I know it is"

There was a case not so long ago with Highway insurance. It was quite a widely publicised case about a bloke and his heavily modded RX7. On his way to a meeting, the car started malfunctioning, so he pulled over to investigate. On doing so the car was engulfed in flames.

to cut a long story short, the insurance company initially refused to pay out because they reckoned that one of the fuel pipes on his car was non standard and as he hadn't declared it, his insurance was null and void!! Not only that, the 'engineer' they sent to inspect it had taken the piece of pipe off the car for his records. They also tried to get out of it by saying the car had been plumbed for NOS, which it hadn't. It transpired that the pipe had been replaced in  Japan a long time before the guy had bought the car and had been routed wrongly so was spraying fuel over the exhaust when the tank was full.

They also tried to get out of it by declaring he was on his way to a 'race' meet. He was in fact going to a RWYB, but that had nothing to do with the claim as he wasn't taking part at the time of the incident.

They eventually paid out due to the immense bad publicity they got over the case.

They tried everything to get out of paying up!!

Highway insurance for anyone that's interested!!
