Climate keeps blowing fuse 15....
« on: 20 March 2011, 15:59:24 »

Treated the 2.2 to a wash today, first time in about 9 months  ::)

Its having its revenge by blowing fuse 15, first time thought it was the climate, as I kept switching from Off to Auto, as I don't think the compressor was running. It stalled, no dash lights (although climate and radio still had power)

It stalled again at the tip, only stopped for around 15 seconds  :( - So I began to think it was the fans.

Got home, stopped for around 30 seconds, temp rose to 90, usually sits on 85, just after 90 heard the fans start, the car spluttered a bit and stalled again.

Popped the bonnet and the cooling fan was running, and switched off shortly after.

Luckly I had a fairly good supply of fuses on board, but bit stumped why it keeps blowing  :-/

Any ideas?

Just done a test, it's not the fans. It's the climate as I first thought. Unplugged the main fan, went for a spin. Got back, let car idling for ages, let temp creep up to 90. It was fine, start turning the climate off and on, few seconds later cut out.

Doing another test now, climate off, engine idling. It ran ok, then the fans clicked on, still fine! Think my compressor is fubared! :(

Can't complain at-all its the first thing thats failed on it in years! I replaced the coil back about 2 years ago, that did not fail, it was just starting too.

Only thing thats ever really failed on it was cam sensor about 4 years go!

Oh a spark plug went, but it had done about a million miles  ::)

And the exhaust flexi but thats it  :)

One question is there a fuse just for the compressor in the engine bay? Would like to just unplug it for now

Don`t think so. When my comp. packed in the fuse never blew when I tried switching A/C on. Easiest way to disable....disconnect multi-plug on comp

Was thinking that. I know its not engaging because all the climate pipework in front of the aux belt area is hot, not cold...

The pressure must be too low causing it to not engage right as I've spotted some green dye about, and around the compressor.

It should just not kick in though, not blow the fuse  :-/

Even though the comp may be knackered, to check whether it`s blowing the fuse, disconnect plug from it then switch climate on, see what happens with the fuse

Have you proved its not the cabin fan and/or its speed controller?

Knowing how much leaves your car gets cover in, its likely the scuttle drain has blocked at some point...

Its never been blocked, only today I popped the cover open, perfectly clear and I blasted the hose through it!

I'll know more tomorrow when I disconnect the compressor...

ok, now this is getting very, very odd! I now think its the earth to the car.

Disconnected the Compressor.

Started the car, with the door open, within a few seconds, the fuse blew but the car kepts running, it was miss-firing, with the brake light & battery light flashing in turn :-?  :-/

Popped a new fuse in, started, same happend.

So began to think was it related to LPG? Turned that off, started, all ok. Start messing with the climate control, Auto to Off over a dozen times, all is good! Got it me thinks, so went inside house (engine running) grab my wallet (mother T  ::)  ;D) - As the petrol light was on  ::)

Get climb in, go to close the door and, bang, it cuts out again! This time (while on petrol) it did not miss-fire, but dash lights, rev couter ect all gone. But climate, radio, door lights still have power.

So not LPG me things, put it back on LPG, engine idling, again mess around with climate fan controls, all ok. Then few minutes later of just idling, just as I go to grab the door again!

I did wash the door sills, wondered of possibly the light in the door could cause it? Popped it out anyway, still cut out!

So bit stumped.... thinking earth to the car (as only thing thats changed is I washed the bloody thing!)

Where is the earth in the engine bay?

Does it blow with Eco on? Also imagine compressor has a relay, ratherthan direct drive from climate panel
