2.0 16v Auto MPG
« on: 21 March 2011, 12:18:52 »

Hi all
May seem like a dumb question - but what you say are the key things to do to get better MPG  :-? i get about 26 mpg

a. Hard Driving 16-19mpg or less
b. Sensible Town Driving 21-23mpg
c. B Roads 26-28mpg
d. MWays 30+mpg
e. Recent trips to Scotland at good speeds (7 hours from Watford to Edinburgh) 33.2mpg?
Am I expecting too much.... but with our suits in Whitehall government 'taxing us' further, I am keen to see if there are ways to save on tax  ::) (being fuel as 63% is tax!)

I have had the AMS changed, ECU re-programmed by an ex-Vauxhall Motor Sport Technician, had new Cambelt (+water pump) at 58k, throttle body fully cleaned etc...

Will new (or better) spark plugs and or special air filters worth looking at  i.e. K&N Filters, NGK Premium Plugs :-?

I have looked at some of these 'gizmo's' but they cannot possibly be any good at £5-35 each!!   :P
What about 'aerodynamics' changes to front grill, vents etc....

Appreciate your thoughts and advice......

I don't think you're far off with those numbers, just try to avoid the 'hard driving'/

Fancy plugs and filters will be a waste of money, just make sure the genuine stuff is in good condition.

Aero is pretty good already.

Mass reduction would surely help, if there are things you can remove.

If possible, check that the lambda sensor is giving good info to the ECU.

Narrow wheels/tyres can only help economy.

That is about what I get from mine. From what I have seen on this forum, the larger V6 varieties get can return a slightly better economy. I guess it has a lot to do with the weight of the car more than anything else. :-/

Thanks Abiton
Lambda is spot on as I have just passed the MOT hence the reason for a new AMS - ouch!
Tyres all good, no extra weight etc...
May try new plugs as I cannot be sure when they were last changed - suspect at least 20,000 as I have done at least 18,000 Air filter too  :o
