I've lived here for 4 years and about the only thing I could tell you about is all the student bars and nightclubs :D

Used to run up Arthur's Seat twice a week from Princes Street though, great for keeping fit (it's about 7km round trip, most of it either up or down hills).

It's not really the place you want to have a car. Hence why I moved into the city centre about 18 months ago, I've got my own parking space so no worries there but I now walk almost everywhere -- 10 mins from Princes Street and 5 mins from the students' union ;).

If there's a meet I'll probably pop along, doubt I'll be using the meeg after the end of this month as the tax is up and I'm not planning on renewing it at the moment.

Having a couple days in Edinburgh soon with SWMBO.
I've never been before so what are the "must do's"  :) & probably as important the "must not's"  ::)
How about the Royal Yacht Brittannia parked at Leith to the East of the City. Try the various whisky challenges and then try to say " The Leith Police " quickly.

...... How about the Royal Yacht Brittannia parked at Leith to the East of the City. .....

I used to see her/it frequently in Pompey dockyard when HM still used it. You used to see a matelot climbing down the f'ward anchor cable with his pot of white paint repairing what had been chipped off when they last weighed it. Now they've cut rather great holes in on of the once imaculate sides!!  :o

.......
but i would go one further back................

Rose St? How times change. 20 odd years ago you would be hard pushed to do a pub crawl along there ...... I tried. There used to be loads of pubs & bars along there.

Or try the Rose Street Challenge... Choose a brand of whisky in the first pub (there are 25 pubs) and attempt to drink the entire street out of that brand. Managed it once but be warned - the choice of brand is important - don't pick a popular one :y

Alternatively visit the Scottish Malt Whisky Society in Leith or Queens Street - the also have luxury apartments to rent.

The the kids up Arthurs Seat - a decent hike up to 800ft - for good views over the town.

Avoid Lothian Road in the evenings and when with the family avoid the West Port area - otherwise known as the pubic triangle which is full of seedy strip bars and lap dancing clubs. Certainly not the kind of place for any OOF members.  ;)
Do you have a post code for the West Port area, just so I can avoid it you understand?
