V6 Cylinder heads, by torchlight?
« on: 24 January 2008, 22:20:20 »

I spent some time tonight removing some known good 3.0 heads, for my new project Elite estate.

I only had about ten mins of daylight left, so I did most of it by torch light. I managed to break my T55 socket, so an urgent trip to Halfrauds to get another was in order...

The NS SAI pipe doesn't clear the PAS pump, so I had to remove the SAI from the NS manifold. Also had to remove the right hand coolant transfer pipe so the manifold would clear, to remove the OS head.

Got them off after a while, but it's sooooo much easier by daylight!

I plan to fully rebuild these heads over this weekend, and fit them to my project car on Monday / Tues   :)

I've already ordered full gasket sets, head bolts, etc etc...

I dont find doing cylinder heads in limited light to bad......coz most of the stuff you need to get at you cant see anyway.

As a tip.....from bitter experiance we have now added another pattern gasket to th avoid list.

Cam shaft seals.

On every engine re-build we have done with the gasket sets, 2-3 of these have leaked afterwards. In fact its proven more succesfult to re-fit the old gaskets than to use the cheaper pattern items!

Dont forget the manifold gaskets are naff as pattern parts as well as the cam cover gaskets.

I am still in Beijing....its now 3.30 in the afternoon!

Interestingly, the Katie Melua song 'there are 9 million bicycles in Beijing' is totaly wrong, well if there is nobody is using them!

I think it should have been titled 'there are 9 million Volkswagen Jettas in Beijing' it would have been more accurate but, I guess that doesn't sound as good!
