remember you never really get good pay rises in goverment roles, and benifits are not always as good as being in a private company.

I went from being a techy at a school, to a techy at a private company. BIG difference.

If you need to spend money and give a good enough reason, companies go for it, public sector don't!

I spose it depends on the level of job and the area of the NHS really. I'm an NHS manager (not on the medical side of things) and I have to say it's been a great employer in general and very well paid compared to what a similar level of responsbility would get in private industry.

That said, I'm redundant in 6 months.....

There's so much more to job satisfaction than money. I've never worked in the public sector so don't really know what it's like in that regard, but I'd happily take a lower paid job that I enjoy, than a fast-paced, highly stressful one that pays well but keeps you in until 7pm each night and expects you to turn up on random weekends etc.

Following the meeting, they are offering:

Higher salary
More holiday, with more regluar increases
More regular salary and cost of living rises.

And they REALLY want me onboard.

As soon as I've got their offer in writing, I'm going to be telling the other (small) employer that I'm sooo sorry, but I can't work for you anymore ::)
