Engine problem

My Y Reg 2.6 Mig puffs out bluey/white smoke on starting, rattles for a couple of seconds and has engine management light on. have been told there is a misfire on idle and that depending on what the problem is it could cost up to a grand to repair.Loses a bit of oil, and water but I dont think they are mixing in the engine. Only done 77k. Is it time for the scrapyard already? Still goes well but up for mot shortly- been told there is air leak and lambda sensor is over compensating by throwing more fuel in. Are Cats going to b knackered as a result? Help Please

Count the flashes and post the codes for a translation of what they mean. Any 030* codes is a missfire which could be a coil pack down. Light on could be pre cat code which is common on drive by wire engines.
 Could point to one problem. What does the oil look like on the dip stick, any mayo/white deposits?

This is normally a indication of valve stem oil seals requiring replacement, on most engines...

This is normally a indication of valve stem oil seals requiring replacement, on most engines...

You can find reference to it on the forum. Vauxhall decided to save themselves a couple a couple of pence per valve stem seal. Result was that they had to reverse the decision when they started to fail. Shyboy has the same problem.

valve stem seals are only about 75p each  :P

Always nice to get a resolution to a posted problem - even after this amount of time (which is a bit  :-?).

Seems excessive to scrap a vehicle on the back of the faults described however, may be interesting to get Tony's reasoning behind it.

Simply would have cost too much money to repair - more than the car was worth.Bodywork fantastic - mechanically buggered - ECU going, valve stem seals, head gasket, etc,etc. Just couldnt afford to repair it. I had it 3 years and in the end it owed me nothing so I scrapped it (after it had been vandalised as well - although it was off road someone objected to where it was parked and carved the word cu*t on the roof and scratched the paintwork).
Sorry if this is upsetting, but I thought about it long and hard before I did it. Petrol costs etc. I'm not a wealthy man and needed the money.
There we go I have got it off my chest now, and hope you all have better luck with your omegas than I had - I think I was naively sold a rough one.
