Timing Belt
« on: 08 April 2011, 00:28:51 »

Hi all,

Brand new to this forum having only purchased my Omega 2.2i CDX auto on Monday of this week. I owned one a number of years ago but t'internet wasn't as it is nowadays back then!!

Since purchasing the car on Monday I have had lots of fun replacing the rocker cover gasket (found loads of oil in the spark plug wells). Also replaced the exhaust manifold gasket due to a slight blow and serviced with new oil and filters etc...To be fair the step by step guides I have found from you guys have been a massive help hence my reason for joining  :)

Right - to my dilema, the car I have bought has almost full sevice history and loads of receipts. However, the last time the cam belt was replaced was at 39,738 miles. I have contacted the previous owner who owned it for 4 years before the guy I got it off and he did NOT replace the cam belt again during his period of ownership. Current mileage is 91,055...Looking at the advice from the various forums it clearly advises to change the cam belt every 40,000 or 4 years etc etc....Problem I have at the moment is me and the Mrs are expecting our 2nd child any day now and we bought an Omega for the extra space etc.....So far this week it has cost me a few quid (that I can ill afford to spare at the moment) including buying a replacement timing belt kit and water pump (might even stretch to an aux belt aswell if you guys advise that to be best). If possible can anybody post me a link on how to replace the timing belt and water pump....Ideally step by step with the pics....if there is such a guide on the forum....I don't feel confident enough to do it myself without the incredibly helpful guides you guys post....Stuck between a rock and a hard place really as I can't afford to put it into a garage to do it nor can I afford to leave it so need to give it my best shot....

Also, does anybody know if I need to buy the special tool kit or can I do it without? Going to try and give it a go tomorrow afternoon (terrifed of going every time I go out at the min).

Any help or guidance or pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated....

Sorry about the rambling on....Just wanted to be as clear as possible!!

Thanks in advance........

There is a dvd available in the OOF shop to instruct on cambelt changes. For the 4cylinder engines I believe you need a cam locking wedge, but it only costs about a fiver or so.
If you cant wait for the dvd to arrive before you do it, Im sure some of the members who have changed a 4 pot cambelt can offer advise. I dont think its that big a job, certainly not compared with the v6 . :y
Also - if you put your approximate location in your profile there may be an experienced member nearby who could come over and help. :y

Thanks mate....Don't really want to wait for the DVD, as you say it doesn't look like that big of job but I just want to make sure I've got all of the tools I need before starting and a step by step guide would be very handy!! Never done a cam belt before but then again I'd never seen the inside of an engine until Tuesday morning when I changed the rocker cover gasket!! Pretty quick learner and I'm very keen to maintain the car well.

Location wise I am in Bolton......Lancashire!!

Good luck  :)  I am looking into doing mine aswell in the near future and will also be my first attempt at a cambelt.

If / when you get it done, I would certainly be interested in your opinion on the ease of the job etc, from the perspective of a first timer  :)

locking tool is laser 3053 its GOLD in colour, they are around £10 from motorfactor or ebay.

Cambelt kit is around £105 from motor factors OR £85 delivered from AutoVaux.

I'm hopefully doing mine either today or tomorrow. Depends when kits arrives.

Book time is around 1hr for the job as its quite straight forward,

The DVD was out of stock when I looked the other day, luckily i have all the autodata info here ;D

I'll try to remember to take some pictures ;)

Thanks guys....I'll ring around now for the locking tool....Is this the only specialist tool that I need apart from the usual mechanics tools?

You'll need a torque wrench for the tensioner/idlers.

Thanks for that, I already have all of the parts including the locking tool mentioned above which I picked up earlier today. I think or should I say I hope I will be fine doing it but I need the spec's for setting the torque on the idler and tensioner etc and some help/advise on setting the tension on the belt....May sound daft but i've never done it before and given some written help I reckon i'll be fine....Anyone?

cam belt on 2.2 is very easy job,but remember to replace the water pump at the same time, waste of time doing belt if pump bearings fail then the belt will go slack and engine is buggered, but fairly easy job compared to v6 :y :y :y
